A bittersweet melodrama from the past
A bittersweet melodrama from the past
| Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing, was originally released in 1982 when I was only 11 years old. I saw in a NYC's Chinatown with my parents. Since then, I have never forgotten the haunting melody that is at the core of this charming bittersweet melodrama. It is the story of Mei who is raised by Uncle Dumb. When Mei receives the once in the lifetime opportunity to become a singer, she grabs it. Somehow along the way, she loses her connections to people in her quest of a successful career. She alienates, not only her foster father, but also her lover/songwriter in the process. The most powerful part of the film is not so much the acting or its storytelling but rather the music. All music is in Mandarin which was still somewhat customary in the 80's in Hong Kong. Your heart will break when Mei sings her final song based upon Uncle Dumb's call in the streets as he sells his wine bottles. If a film I saw when I was 11 has yet to be forgotten, it is definitely worth a viewing! |
