지난 2002년 발표한 4집 앨범『Op.4』이후 만 2년 만에 박정현의 정규 앨범 5집『On&On』이 발매된다. 배낭 하나만을 들고 아리조나 사막을 횡단하는 모습을 파노라마 사진에 담은 시원한 앨범자켓은 이번 앨범 역시 “박정현의 아티스트로의 여정이 계속되고 있으며 끊임없는 음악적 진보를 원한다”는 이미지를 대변하고 있는 것 같다.
이번 5집 앨범과 기존에 발표된 앨범들간의 차이점은 앨범을 듣기에 앞서 앨범 속지에서부터 쉽게 발견해 낼 수 있다. 간간히 들려주었던 자작곡을 수록하는 정도에서 머무는 것이 아니라 프로듀싱, 한국어 작사, 보컬 어레인지, 코러스 어레인지 등 이번 앨범을 작업하면서 많은 부분에 박정현이 참여 하였다는 것을 앨범 credit을 통해 알 수 있을 것이다.
앨범을 들어보면 전작들에 비해 박정현 본인의 뮤지션적 비중이 높아져 있음을 더욱 공감하게 하는데, 그 동안 아티스트가 추구해오던 ‘R&B적인 보컬과 다른 장르들과의 혼합의 시도’가 앨범 전체에 녹아 있음을 느끼며, 특별한 변화가 있음을 알 수 있을 것이다. 더욱이 자작곡이 아닌 정석원, 황성제, 황찬희 등과 같은 저마다의 개성이 확실한 음악인들과 작업하며서 자신의 색을 버리지 않고 완성도 있는 앨범을 만들어 냈다는 것은 박정현을 단순한 보컬리스트로만 평가하기에는 무리가 있겠다.
또한 이미 최고로 평가받고 있는 보컬 자체에서도 박정현 본인은 만족하고 있는 모습은 아닌 듯 하다. 프로덕션 기간 중에는 가장 예민하게 다룬 부분을 보컬 녹음이라고 알려져 있는데, 전곡이 빈티지 마이크와 프리앰프를 사용하여 녹음 되었으며, 미국 녹음시 채플린의 스튜디오 였으며 “USA for Africa”의 스튜디오로 널리 알려져 있는 Henson Studio 의 수많은 빈티지 마이크들을 모두 테스트 해본 후 가장 박정현에게 잘 어울리는 마이크와 프리앰프를 선별했다고 한다. 세밀하게 진행되는 스튜디오 녹음시 박정현에게 가장 돋보이는 점은 자신의 연출력인데, 속삭임과 지름, 진성과 가성의 완변한 완급조절은 과연 박정현의 능력의 끝은 없는 것인가 하는 생각마저 들게 한다.
앨범의 타이틀 곡인 “달”은 일본과 공동 프로젝트로 만들어 진 곡인데, Chen Min이라는 이호(二湖) 연주가의 연주곡을 보컬버젼으로 만들어 낸 곡이다. 멜로디의 동양적 서정성에 웅장하고 팝적인 요소의 편곡을 섞은 대곡으로, 현재 일본에서 발표되었으며 한국에서도 그 활동을 이어가겠다는 의지를 보여주고 있다.
동양적인 멜로디를 팝적으로 극복하기 위해서 편곡자인 황성제와 수십여가지 버전의 편곡을 시도하여 가장 훌륭한 모델을 골라냈다고 하는데, 현재 미국 대중음악계를 이끌고 있는 드러머인 Kenny Aronoff의 묵직한 톤의 리듬과, 섬세하고 힘있는 Michael Thompson의 기타, 그리고 세계 영화음악의 중심지인 Hollywood의 오케스트라 세션들이 참여하여 드라마틱하고 힘이 넘치는 세계를 보여주고 있다. 일본어 버전의 프로듀스를 함께한 거물 뮤지션 Takebe Satoshi는 “최근 내가 작업한 곡 중 최고이며, 아시아 최고의 보컬과 함께 일하게 되어 너무나 즐겁다”라고 커멘트 하였다고 한다.

Big, bold and beautiful

I'm working my way backwards through Lena Park's albums. My introduction to her work was her spectacular sixth album, a true tour de force for a terrific singer/songwriter. "On & On", Lena's fifth album, has a significantly different sound than her sixth album. It has a much glossier, more commercial, more heavily produced sound, with lush orchestrations and big, bold, belting vocals from our girl Lena. The album includes many standout songs, including my fave, track 7. "On & On" is a nice complement to Lena's more idiosyncratic sixth album. I highly recommend them both. Lena Park is one of the most intelligent and interesting performers in pop music today. |

Elegance at its Best~

If I had one word to describe this album, it'd have to be 'Elegant'. I love how everything is well-composed and beautifully arranged. From the classical piano intro and outro, to the tracks that present elements of royalty, grace, mystique, and allure. "On & On" is another hit masterpiece by Lena. A heavy orchestral influence is present into most, if not all of the songs within this album. My favorite track would have to be "Areumdaun Neoreul" (Track #2) which is a perfect blend of classical and contemporary soft-rock. It's just amazing. Other notables include "Miracle" (Track #5), "Geureoji Maseyo" (Track #8), and "Mia" (Track #10). Definitely would recommend this album! |

great music and a question
| Lena Park really is a great singer, but I really actually have a question for those who also bought this CD, did your CD have Lena Park's signature on it? `Cuz mine does, and I was curious if it was on all of the CD's...if not, I guess I was lucky! :P |

Excellent,
| Although after listening to this, I still think Op 4 is her best to date, this one comes in as a close second. Miss Park has one of the best voices I've heard and she's refreshing and original. I hope she plans on touring soon as I really would like to see her in concert. |
