An adventurous album

The album starts off with the three dance tracks "Party queen", "NaNaNa", and "Shake It♥", all of them fitting to a "party queen" theme with their carefree and fun sound. That's only the surface, though, looking closely at the lyrics may tell you a darker story about the "party queen." The tracks are catchy and more unique and memorable than others in the same genre, and the depth of the lyrics make them even more interesting. Then comes the guitar interlude "taskebab", a fluent transition from "Shake It♥" to "call". "call" tells a love story in which one person always hide their problems from the other, and the next song titled "Letter", tells a story about acceptance in spite of one's flaws. The two songs are quite good, "call" has a catchy guitar melody which you easily sing and move to, and "Letter" has a heartfelt sound. The story gets more depressing though, as "reminds me" is about being unable to accept things as they are, and "Return Road" is the sad story of a break-up; the emotional lyrics in both songs are exceptional, with great vocals and catchy melodies."Tell me why" tells about the distance (physical and emotional) between two people in a relationship, again with great lyrics, music and vocals. After this comes the interlude "a cup of tea", a confusing and vertigo-like piece. What follows is two jazz songs, coated with theatrical, dramatic touches. "the next LOVE" is about a girl pondering over the meaning of becoming an adult and finding love, with cynical conclusions. "Eyes, Smoke, Magic" follows a similar line, with a child watching the cold distance between her parents. I can't help but imagine these songs being performed as part of a musical, which makes the songs feel even more "alive" than usual. After this follows "Serenade in A minor", a tranquil piece setting a pleasant ambiance for the ballad "how beautiful you are", which has a beautiful, heartwarming tone. This implies some hope that the lonely queen can someday feel happy about herself, and find the unconditional love she used to believe didn't exist... I, personally, love this album. The songs feel very unique and memorable, with a lot of emotional content and deeper meaning to be found. I give special mentions to "the next LOVE" and "Eyes, Smoke, Magic", I am usually not a big fan of jazz but in these songs the jazz just makes everything else seem even better. The album as a whole has flaws, but it's an amazing adventure to listen to, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. |

Very Different From Other Albums

I think the effect that Ayumi was going for with this album was to try something that she hadn't done before. But I really feel that this album is lacking in depth. The lyrics on some of the songs are just.....Meh. And that is the first time I have ever said that about Ayu's writting. Songs like "NaNaNa" (which has almost a Nu Metal effect to it) and "SHAKE it!" are fun to listen to as long as you are not expecting something profound. The title track "Party Queen" has an 80s sound to it but the lyrics remind me of something a North American pop singer would write. NaNaNa talks about a night on the town where Ayu and her gang get crazy, SHAKE it! tells us girls that we "have a magic only we can use" and means exactly what you think it does. Eyes, Smoke, Magic and the next LOVE have super cool, jazzy, cabaret music to them but speaks from the perspective of a child, something which, considering Ayu is no longer a child anymore, physically nor mentally, comes off kinda weird. "the next LOVE" has Ayu asking where can she "buy" love which I find very dissapointing. There are some real gems on here though. "Return Road" is more what you would expect from the Empress Of Jpop and uses an organ to create a dreamwave effect(think Monochrome, Microphone). "Tell Me Why"is a perfect song and Reminds Me is another good one with a heavy guitar solo in the middle. Call and Letter both have that acoustic rock sound to them (think Last Links only much improved) and Letter reminds me just a little of Heartplace from her Rainbow album. How Beautiful You Are, which was the only single, actually is the only classical ballad on the whole album. The interludes were dissapointing to me. Taskebab rips off Daft Punk's "Aerodynamic" which makes me kinda mad. The booklet is probably the worst Ayu has ever done. And again, this is the first time I have really critisized her image. The PVS are not up to snuff either. Return Road is the only one I liked. So basically, this album has it's real ups and downs. I bought it because I am a huge fan of Ayumi Hamasaki but newer fans who don't have her other albums yet should wait before buying this. |

PRE-ORDER REVIEW
PRE-ORDER REVIEW

I pre-ordered this album without much to go on except the songs How Beautiful You Are and Party Queen, which I had heard Ayu sing live in her HOTEL LOVE SONGS tour. At first I thought this album would be more along the lines of Next Level which had mostly electro pop songs with 2 rock songs and 2 ballads. However after listening to the music samples for all songs( you can find these on Ayu's official website under the discography section) I realized how wrong I was. In fact Party Queen is the only song of it's kind on the whole album. Almost all the songs on Party Queen have rock roots with the exceptions of "the next LOVE", "Eyes, Smoke, Magic", and "How Beautiful You Are". "A Cup of Tea" and "Serenade In A Mirror" don't but they are both instrumentals. Na Na Na and SHAKE it merge heavy metal with synthy dance music. While the songs "Call", "Letter", "Reminds Me" and "Tell Me Why" sounds like they follow more along the lines of "Last Links" with the merging of classical ballad type song and rock ballad type song. "Return Road" sounds like it is a power ballad with more dreamwave(think the organ sounds from Monochrome and Microphone) inserted in the middle. Taskebab is an instrumental that heavily uses an electric guitar for a nice rock sound. "A Cup Of Tea" is a strange electronic interlude that I interpreted to take off of Alice In Wonderland's Mad Tea Party. "Serenade In A Mirror" is a slow classical interlude which uses strings. "the next LOVE" and "Eyes, Smoke, Magic" have almost a slinky, Broadway, theater sound to them. How Beatiful You Are is a sweet classical ballad, and the only one of it's type in the whole album. Keep in mind that all this I got from listening to music samples. There is plenty of room for surprise. However, if my guesses are right, this album should be like a mix between Next Level and Rock N Roll Circus. A good buy indeed! And the fact that the PVS for "How Beautiful You Are," "Na Na Na" and "Return Road" were shot in London, and the PV for "SHAKE it" was shot in the Middle East, is all just icing on the cake. I am not sorry I pre-ordered at all. |
