At least it looks good... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Ping Pong" visually is quite stylish; its ping pong action looks fabulous. However, its story is underdeveloped and its characters are cartoonish.

The filmmakers' concern for style over substance became evident quite early in the movie when we are introduced to the character called China, whom we are told is from Shanghai. China never speaks putonghua or Shanghainese; he speaks only Cantonese. Clearly, the filmmakers didn't care that it was unrealistic to have a Cantonese-speaking character from Shanghai. And the same lack of realism infects the entire film.

Frankly, I never believed any of the characters. Throughout the film, I was never able to detach myself from the thought that these are actors playing parts in a movie. In other words, the characters never came to life for me. Why? Because they are all paper-thin.

I probably am overrating this film by giving it eight stars. Frankly, I can't imagine sitting through it for a second time. However, it is visually interesting, its sports action is entertaining, and its ends strongly. I wish that the filmmakers had taken as much care with developing the rest of the story as they did with those final scenes.

No wonder this film was nominated for several awards. Too bad they only got one. Nice movie... you'll never get tired of watching over and over again.

This movie was amazing thru and thru! the cast, the director, the storyline, the soundtrack... i can just imagine all the people that it took to make this movie... i applaud all of them... even the person who's only job was to run errands and to get food for other people on the sets! Great Job!

No need to be a Ping Pong fan Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
No need to be a ping pong fan to enjoy this movie, nor a fan of the original manga either. While the filming and directing of the ping pong scenes are first rate, you'll appreciate the acting accomplished by the actors. Each character has it's own original personality, making the ping pong tournament look like an exciting tournament of different personalities, and not so much about ping pong itself. You just have to love Peco's joy and enthusiasm in life, and respect Smile's coolness throughout the movie. Is this movie about hard work, sportsmanship, perspiration and friendship? Perhaps. But in the end, ping pong, like any other sports, is about having fun and enjoying yourself.

Great movie: a must have! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
What can I say that hasn't already been said?
The story isn't special, but the way it has been brought to film is. For many people in Europe, tabletennis is a boring sport, that you do one or twice during holidays. Mind you, not for me. But this film really brings the sport to life, with superb camerawork, effects and above all, excellent acting. The actors make you get into the story....very touching.
I can't imagine that anybody could be dissapointed when they buy this.

The greatest ping-pong movie in existence Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
From a tennis player's point of view, it is great to finally see a movie about ping-pong. In the U.S., ping-pong is not that big of a sport as tennis. Japan might be vice-versa. Before watching this movie, I questioned myself on how great a movie about ping-pong could be. Only a ping-pong or tennis player can truly understand how important a game or set could be. Most people can only see 2 people hitting a ball back and forth. This movie succeeded in showing how fun ping-pong can be at times. The camera angles and video graphics help in the enhancement of their games. Overall, this would probably be the greatest ping-pong game ever.

Excellent! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When I firt heard about "Ping-Pong", I thought two things; "What kind of person would watch a movie about ping pong.." & "..How the heck did this movie get so many great reviews?" So I went out and bought it. ...I cant stress how excellent this movie is. Humor, Drama, Action. It seems to lack in the Romance department, but thats not its purpose anyway, ne? Kobuzuka Yosuke is an amazing actor. I fell in love with his ability to portrait his character so effectively! Ping Pong is about identity struggles, high school competition, and of course..Ping Pong. An intro that starts off with a bang, the movie will grasp your attention span for the whole 2 hours and wont even let it go. Effectively combined with graphics, its worth every cent. Highly recommended minna-san.

Yousuke Kubozuka!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I first have to say that I've been a fan of this guy ever since his acting in the drama Ikebukuro West Gate Park. This movie actually isn't a very funny one but is still entertaining. It immerses the audience into the world of Ping Pong and some of the weird things Peco does. I have to admit that entertainment mostly comes from the character of Peco.
