France, World War II. An Eighteen-year-old English girl, Susan Traherne, working for the Resistance, meets an agent, Lazar, with whom she spends a passionate twenty-four hours. He receives orders which force him to leave as suddenly as he appeared. After the war, Susan is on holiday in Brussels; the married man she is traveling with dies of a heart attack. Raymond Brock, a member of the British Embassy staff, is appointed to repatriate the corpse; fascinated by Susan's enigmatic character, he agrees to lie to the man's wife to avoid pain and embarrassment. Susan also meets the pragmatic British ambassador, Sir Leonard Darwin. Susan returns to England and she and brock become lovers; he frequently crosses the channel to visit her. But her free-spirited and unconventional girlfriend, Alice Park, disdains the straightlaced Brock. Susan and Brock quarrel and she suggests they spend the winter apart....
