Produced by Chang Tso Chi (The Best of Times) and helmed by Golden Bell-winning director Wang Jin Gui, Pongso No Tao takes its name from the film's setting, the rustic island of Lanyu (Orchid Island) off the southeastern coast of Taiwan. Called Pongso No Tao in the local aboriginal Yami language, Lanyu is separated from the rest of Taiwan by a half-hour flight, but feels like it could be a world away with its fishing villages and deep aboriginal roots. Similar in theme to The Song of Spirits and Fishing Luck (also set on Lanyu), Pongso No Tao explores Taiwan's aboriginal traditions and customs through a quietly enchanting story of romance and reflection. After collaborating in Mandheling, Lin Chia Yu (The Moon Also Rises) and Bobby Dou (Sword Stained with Royal Blood) strike perfect chemistry the second time around in Pongso No Tao as a nature-loving teacher and an aboriginal youth disillusioned by Taipei who start new lives in Lanyu.
