YesAsia Editorial Description

As with any Miyazaki Hayao film, the 2008 animated masterpiece Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is not only a movie, but an event in Asia. A magical tale about a young goldfish who yearns to become a human girl, the auteur's ninth Studio Ghibli film took the local box office by storm, grossing over 15 billion yen to become the highest-grossing film of 2008 by a large margin. It is also the first Japanese film to pass the 10 billion yen mark since Miyazaki's previous Howl's Moving Castle. Pointedly sticking to traditional animation in the age of CG, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is completely hand-drawn to fine detail, from magnificent rippling waves to magical underwater creatures to Ponyo's every gesture. Dotted with the strong environmental themes and fantastical leaps of imagination signature to Miyazaki's works, the film turns an endearing pint-sized love story into a visually and emotionally enchanting experience of grand proportions. A heartwarming family feature for all ages, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea inspires the kind of wide-eyed wonder only possible in a Ghibli film.

Five-year-old boy Sosuke lives on a cliff by the sea with his headstrong mother, Lisa. One day he rescues a curious-looking fish from the sea, and names her Ponyo. Sosuke vows to love and protect Ponyo forever, but little does he know, his new pet is no ordinary fish. Ponyo is actually the runaway daughter of an eccentric sea wizard who soon comes to retrieve her. Enchanted by her first taste of the world above water, Ponyo determinedly steals her father's potions to become a human girl, and happily returns to Sosuke on the tails of a terrific storm. Her little escapade, however, releases a great destabilizing magical force into the world. When Sosuke and Ponyo wake up the next morning, they find their town is completely submerged underwater.

Product Information

Director : Hayao Miyazaki

Five year-old Sosuke lives high on a cliff overlooking the Inland Sea. One morning while playing on the rocky beach below his house, he discovers a goldfish named Ponyo, her head stuck fast in a jam jar. Sosuke rescues her and keeps her in a green plastic pail.
Ponyo is fascinated by Sosuke. Sosuke feels the same about Ponyo. He tells her, “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you and take care of you.” But Ponyo’s father Fujimoto―once human, now a sorcerer who lives deep under the sea―forces her to return with him to the ocean depths.
“I want to be human!” Ponyo declares, and determined to become a little girl and make her way back to Sosuke, Ponyo escapes. But before she does, she empties the Water of Life, Fujimoto’s precious store of magical elixir, into the ocean.
The sea waters rise. Ponyo’s sisters are transformed into enormous fish-shaped tidal waves that climb as high as Sosuke’s house on the cliff. The chaos of the ocean world envelops Sosuke’s little town and it sinks beneath the waves.
A little girl and a little boy. Love and responsibility. The sea and life itself. In an age of nervous anxiety and uncertainty, PONYO ON THE CLIFF BY THE SEA is Hayao Miyazaki’s unreserved depiction of the story of a mother and her child.

Artistic Artist & Talented Composer! Score:9/10 Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I like this animated movie a lot! It did not get a perfect score from me because the movie is a little disjointed in my opinion. However, I really enjoyed watching the second disk which are the hand drawn sketches of the whole movie by the director, Mr. Miyazaki Hayao. He is an excellent artist. I admire him, because he is able to liberate himself from the real world and chose to live in an oasis in his own imaginations and creations. You can tell from his sketches that he indeed enjoys his works. The little kid and Ponyo are so cute. You have to watch them and you might find a little of yourself in them. Out of the whole movie, I love the scenic coastal valleys the best. The omni-presence figure of Ponyo's mother is comforting and reassuring. And there are other well like figures and scenes in the movie that are pretty. The music director, Hisaishi Joe has done an excellent job too. So, watch this movie!

Beautiful story of an unlikely friendship Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Ponyo" tells of a little boy named Sosuke who lives in a house on a cliff by the sea. One day he finds a humanoid fish creature, who he names Ponyo. Ponyo is trapped inside a littered glass bottle and Sosuke saves her. We later learn that Ponyo's "father" is a mad scientist who, disgusted by humanity's polluting habits, now lives in the ocean and hopes to breed a host of new sea creatures to take over the world and save the planet from mankind's filth.

This shorthand description makes the environmental aspect of the story sound a bit more heavy-handed than it plays on the screen. The heart of the film is the loving friendship between the intrepid Sosuke and the exuberant Ponyo, displayed as they set out on their mission to find Sosuke's mother after a terrible storm. Children will be captivated up by the charming antics of Sosuke and Ponyo. Older kids and parents may be distracted by the weirdness of Ponyo's father and his frightening mission and by the not-fully-realized character of Ponyo's sea goddess mother.

Sosuke and Ponyo will win your heart and leave you smiling. I recommend "Ponyo" highly.
