YesAsia Editorial Description

Before Romeo and Juliet and Chunhyang, there was Seo Dong and Seon Hwa. The fated love between Princess Seon Hwa of the Shilla kingdom and Seo Dong, the future King Mu of the Baekje kingdom, is a classic tale set in Shakespearean lore. It is immortalized in Seo Dong Yo, or Song of the Prince, an old Korean folk song that spread quickly through the palace and the country during the Shilla period. This age-old story now receives new life under Lee Byung Hoon, the man behind masterpieces like Dae Jang Geum and Hur Jun. Lee gives a new spin to the usual historical drama formula by focusing on scientific aspects of the period instead of the usual conflict between Baekje and Shilla. With stars Jo Hyun Jae (Love Letter), Lee Bo Young (Mr. Good-bye), and Ryu Jin (Summer Scent) on board, Seo Dong Yo (a.k.a. Potato Boy) promises to be as innovative and engaging as Lee's previous historical dramas.

Seo Dong (Jo Hyun Jae) is just a commoner, a technician who grew up in Baekje's prestigious Taehaksa Institute, but his life is on the brink of extraordinary change. His love for Shilla's Princess Seon Hwa (Lee Bo Young) transforms his life forever, and he carries a secret that could alter the fate of the Baekje kingdom.

Great drama! Great acting by JO HYUN JAE! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Love this drama! Writer and director really knows how to end each episode with a great cliffhanger. Great acting by the whole cast especially handsome actor JO HYUN JAE. His beautiful eyes are his best asset because they can convey so many emotions. What a superb actor! I have admired him ever since watching him in his drama LOVE LETTER. I love his relationships with Princess Sunhwa, Princess Wooyoung, Mokrasoo and Prince Aja. I cried with him as he held his dying brother Prince Aja in his arms. I cried with him when he had to part once again with Princess Sunhwa. I love him even in his scene when he tried to give his necklace to Princess Wooyoung. I felt so emotionally moved as I watched him smile his beautiful smile with that sad beautiful eyes of his at the ending of the series. I also like the message of the drama - that our life is not dictated by fate but by the choices we make as we go through life.

long drama but worth watching Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
A very long drama with many many exciting epistles. Don't be too fussy with details and you will enjoy it tremendously. It shows all aspects of love that Koreans are so good at. Love, whether between men and women, emporor and guards, masters and slaves, father and son are all so very well portraited but the greatest love comes from Princess Yo Yung when she was willing to sacrifice herself and her family to save someone who couldn't even give her a little of the love she hoped for. This is the first time I watched the end of the baddies and felt sorry for them. The bad emperor and his very faithful personal guard 'Ha Chi Ping' were very touching at the end when baddie emperor repented and Ha killed him to save him from his misery but promised to be there with him always before committing suicide. The worst person Chi Leo was so wicked throughout but in the end he did right. I am not sure about the last epistle. I much prefer a happier ending. You do feel you are at a loss when the series is finished though.

Better than Dae Jang Geum! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is an excellent drama and in my opinion better than Jewel of the Palace. I highly recommend this drama but do wait until the subtitles in Chinese and English version is released.

Awesome series Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the best k-drama I've viewed. The plot and characters are so well-written. They portray the sins and weaknesses of human nature (what people will do to gain power). There is no question/doubt on the clarity of morally right and wrong decisions made by the characters. Jang and Giroo both had obstacles but both made such different choices which led to their conclusive ending. I love K-drama for its ability to always portray the strong love between the lead characters, their integrity and faithfulness for each other, and their fight to attain their love despite all the hardships and obstacles thrown in their way. Their love was tested again and again and yet they prevailed. It is just a beautiful story. I hope YA Entertainment will come up with Region 1 DVDs for U.S. customers and with better English subtitle. I'm sure many will love this one as much as they love "Dae Jang Guem". Kudos to the writers and actors for bringing this show to life!
