《芳名卡門》是高達對梅里美的文學名著《卡門》的現代演鐸。美麗誘人的卡門是個恐怖分子(瑪魯斯卜下．迪特瑪斯飾)。她和組織其他成員在策劃一宗銀行劫案，並向她的導演舅父尚(尚盧．高達飾)訛稱要借用他的房子拍電影，其實是和成員們匿藏在那裡。她在劫案中遇上衛的瑟夫(積．波奈菲飾)，竟和他由相搏到相戀，兩個本來敵對的角色展開段愛慾交纏的織烈關係。約瑟夫更為愛情跟隨了卡門和她的伙伴。不過卡門對約瑟夫的熱情卻逐漸冷卻，無法接受感情創傷的他在一次組織的縛架行動中殺死了她……
高達在卡門驚豔的裸體影像間穿插了她舅舅嘗試拍電影及槳團演奏貝多芬四重奏的片段，還大量迌廾用現實中各種的噪音，言論，渲染出人物的心理狀況和環境的氛圍。作品的聲音和畫面融為一體，被影評人譽為“音響革命富有詩意的宣言”。

Carmen X (Maruschka Detmers) is a beautiful female of a terrorist gang. She asks her uncle Jean (Jean-Luc Godard), a washed-up film director if she can borrow his beachside house to make a film, but indeed she plans to use it as a cache for the gang after a bank robbery. Carmen falls in love with a security guard, Joseph Bonnaffe (Jacques Bonnaffe) durign the robbery, the two then fiercely develop a relationship of desire and fervor. Joseph even joins the terrorist group for Carmen's sake. However, Carmen's passion towards Joseph soon dies out. The desperater love kills his beloved goddess in an kidnapping operation of the gang...
The director alternates gorgeous erotic scenes with uncle Jean's attempt to direct a come-back film as well as a string orchestra's performances of Beethoven's quartet in a poetic rhythm. "Prenom Carmen" is Godard's modern variation of Prosper Merimee's literature mastepiece "Carmen".
