Two more adventures from Journey to the West get adapted to the big screen in Princess Iron Fan, the second Shaw Brothers Monkey King film from director Ho Meng Hua! In the first adventure, Monkey (Ngok Wah) AKA: Sun Wukong must obtain a magical fan to save a village from a raging inferno. The fan is the property of the temperamental Princess Iron Fan (Pat Ting), who won't let it go easily. The established trickster that he is, Monkey disguises himself as her husband the Ox Demon to get the fan and save the day! In the second adventure, Monkey and companions battle the White Bone Demon (Shaw Brothers kung-fu princess Cheng Pei Pei) and her sexy sister Lily Ho. The duplicitous sisters trick priest Xuanzhang (Ho Fan) into exiling Monkey, and then capture the priest and his remaining disciples. That leaves Xuanzhang's fate, and the fate of his fabled journey to the west, in the hands of - who else - the Monkey King! More colorful costumes, hilarious comedy, and gorgeous fantasy goodness take to the screen in the second Monkey King adventure, Princess Iron Fan!

The Monkey King returns
|
"Princess Iron Fan" presents two tales from the classic novel "Journey to the West". In the first tale, Princess Iron Fan (Pat Ting) blocks the path to the West for Monkey and his friends by creating a great raging inferno. A small village near the blaze is being wiped out by the heat. The fire can be quelled only by waving the Princess's magical iron fan. Monkey seeks to steal the fan and put out the fire by taking on the form of the Princess's long-absent husband, the Ox Demon (Ching Miao). However, just as Monkey is on the brink of success, the real Ox Demon shows up and chaos ensues. In the second tale, the White Bone Demon (Cheng Pei Pei) and her sister (Lily Ho) have learned that eating the body of the Buddhist priest Xuanzhang (Ho Fan) will bless them with increased magical powers! To accomplish this feat, they know that they need to use deceit to separate the priest from his protector, Monkey. Through their strategy, they succeed in making Monkey look like a frightfully bad guy to the priest, but Monkey's resourcefulness ensures that this is not the end of the story. As with the other three films in this excellent series, "Princess Iron Fan" combines comedy, endless scheming, stylized action, and music to create a delight. Stand-outs here are Ching Miao as the blundering Ox Demon (and as Monkey pretending to be the Ox Demon) and cute-as-a-button Cheng Pei Pei as the devious White Bone Demon. Miss Cheng has an opportunity to show off her years of ballet training in one of the film's musical numbers. I also particularly enjoyed a scene in which Monkey presides as king over a host of his little monkey minions. It all adds up to wonderfully lusty entertainment. |

Maybe too classic for me....

A charming very classic rendition of a portion of the Journey to the West stories beautifully remastered with identifiable actors like Cheng Pei-pei during their youth & supporting roles. However, I found the film a touch too dated for my taste. I wonder if anyone will ever try to make a decent, up-to-date re-vamp of this favorite story. (I would prefer a Chinese Opera rendition over this film version.) |

The best of the 4 "Journey Goes to the West"

Ho Meng Wah have directed four sequels "Journey Goes to the West" when he was in SB. Princess Iron Fan is the best among the 4 cos the storyline is exciting and u can see the top shaw actors and actresses in this movie, the young Lily Ho, Cheng Pei Pei, Lily Li, Shen Yi and Yueh Hua who protrays as the Monkey. Peng Peng is the best to protray the greedy,silly and cheeky choo pai Chek. Of course, v have Pat Ting Hung as the Princess Iron Fan. If u r looking for a movie for a family, it definitly suits it. |

One of the three "Journey to the West" classic-based movie starring Lily Ho, Cheng Pei Pei, Pat Ting and Yueh Hwa. Simple plot but intersting characters and songs. A all-time favourite classic worth watching. |
