乾隆三十年，是乾隆生命中發生了許多大事的一年。乾隆帶著龐大的車隊、馬隊、儀隊、扈從隊……，作第四次「南巡」。跟隨乾隆一起出發的，有太后、皇后、五阿哥、小燕子、福晉、爾康、紫薇、晴兒、容嬤嬤、蕭劍、紀小嵐等人。
一路上，發生了許多意料不到的事情。小燕子依舊「膽大心不細，有勇沒有謀」，熱心有餘，思考欠周。鬧了不少笑話，也闖了不少禍。來到浙江海寧，乾隆帶著眾人前往陳邦直府上，陳邦直乃乾隆民間摯友。當晚，陳府擺出盛宴款待他們，陳家四個女兒；知琴、知書、知棋與知畫，亦與眾人相歡。其中，最出色的十七歲小女兒「知畫」，聰慧秀麗，才華出眾。太后越看越喜歡，心中也打起了如意算盤，沒想到這個算盤竟成日後小燕子與永琪之間永難磨滅的傷痛。
來到西湖，乾隆和許多鶯燕燕在喝酒作樂。其中有一個絕色女子，清秀絕倫，姓夏，名叫「盈盈」，乾隆恍然似曾相識。盈盈扣弦而歌，歌聲曼妙。乾隆突然宣稱，要封盈盈作妃子，此事震驚了太后和皇后。皇后心急如焚，更寫了一封萬言書，向乾隆懇切力諫。乾隆覽信大怒，皇后百口莫辯，剪去一頭青絲。乾隆更是怒發如狂，讓人立刻送皇后回北京。乾隆遣走了皇后，情緒大壞，決定提前結束南巡的行程。
回到北京之後，太后竟查出小燕子是乾隆年間被抄斬的方家後裔，小燕子的生父因一首「剃頭詩」被處死刑，小燕子與乾隆竟有一場血海深仇。召來眾人，小燕子也在這樣的狀況之下，知道了自己的身世。太后因永琪身份特殊，心有顧忌，不敢把小燕子的身世告訴乾隆。但為了簫劍做了最大的犧牲。此後，知畫橫在永琪小燕子之間，帶來一連串前所未有的風暴。
此時，緬甸進軍攻打邊疆，情況告急。乾隆派永琪和爾康率領大軍前往平定亂事。突如來的狀況，讓眾人的恩恩怨怨，暫時拋開。永琪和爾康到了雲南，意外見到前來相助的簫劍，三人異地重逢，欣喜若狂，決定攜手為國家打一場漂亮的勝戰。
這場戰役，打了好幾個月，在後緩不繼，和天候不佳的情況下，永琪爾康簫劍漸漸落敗。在一次激戰中，爾康身陷重圍，身受重傷。當永琪和簫劍奮不顧身的追來搶救，卻在一片烽火和遍地屍骨中，找不到爾康的身影。直到三天後，永琪簫劍清理戰場，才赫然發現爾康面目全非的屍體。永琪在狂怒狂悲的心情下，決心奮力死戰，一場死戰，居然把敵人打得落荒而逃。清軍大勝。
永琪帶回了勝利，也帶回了爾康的屍體。紫薇如遭雷擊，完全崩潰，怎樣也無法接受這個事實。爾康的父母福倫夫婦，更是哀痛欲絕。紫薇憑著與爾康之間的心靈感應，她相信爾康並沒有死。
紫薇決定到雲南邊境，千里尋夫，小燕子和永琪也決定千里伴紫薇。晴兒和蕭劍這次重逢，恍如隔世，決定一起高飛遠走。誰知事機不密，知畫告訴了乾隆有關小燕子的身世。乾隆找來永琪，詢問真相，永琪坦誠相告。乾隆幾經思量，終於將方家當年的文字獄，整個調查清楚。且忍痛答應孩子們的離去。於是小燕子和永琪離開皇宮，陪伴紫薇走上尋夫的漫長路途。簫劍和晴兒，也在乾隆默許下，一起離開了。
走了四個月，走到雲南邊境。歷經千辛萬苦，眾人終於找到爾康，紫薇和爾康再見，恍如隔世。經過幾次鬼門關的考驗，上蒼終於將紫薇的爾康完整還給她了。
小燕子等人到了大理，卻找不著含香和蒙丹。但是，看到雲南山明水秀，又是簫劍繼父的家鄉，大家就在大厘落地生根了。他們知道，只要人間有愛，天上人間，都是天堂！這是一個嶄新的開始，他們學著去做一個「普通人」。

Unexpectedly Superb!
| Unlike many others, I did not enjoy HZGG I nor II because I thought the plot was very silly and altogether irrelevant. However, HZGGIII took a 180 turn from the other two. I must applaud Huang Yi on her protrayal! Because of her, I no longer find the character Tieu Yen Tu annoying, instead I feel so much empathy for her dilemmas and love for Dinh Ky. Ah, her chemistry with Leo Koo was so tense! *clap clap* Leo Koo was awesome! Anyways, I LOVE the plot of this new HZGG. Much more captivating. Thumbs up and highly recommended! |

More Than Excellent

This show is very interesting...If compared to the last show, this show is more interesting. It is full of emotions and made me cried for this show a few times...I hope this show will repeat a few times like the other times. Keep on repeating non-stop!!! I hope there will still be more interesting shows playing... Hope that it will play the next show of this quickly as i really can't wait anymore...Although i do not know whether there are still some more, but i think there should be have....I hope the writer of this show will write some more for us to see... |

Great Conclusion
| At first I was reluctant to accept that the new cast would do the old characters justice, but after a few episodes I was sucked in. It took some getting used to but the newly cast Yong Qi, Xiao Yan Zi, and Zhi Wei did great jobs. I'm glad there is finally a set conclusion, and a really good one at that. I was all choked up in the final epilogue type ending. I hope there will be more with the children. |

Great Acting
| In my opinion, this was the best one out of all three because the acting felt more real and the plot was more intense. The new actors all did a wonderful job, most even better than the original. All 40 episodes were heartfelt and full of emotion, just be sure to give the story time to develop, after the first few episodes, you'll be hooked! |

Excellent
| I loved this installment of the ongoing series. Forget what others have said about the different actors and what not, i think they all did a superb job conveying the emotions and personalities of the charactes. I actually cried in this one because it was so well acted out, and it's actually my favorite one now. HZGG3 is much more mature and those who can't handle it just have childish tastes and fancies I guess. |
