乾隆三十年，是乾隆生命中發生了許多大事的一年。乾隆帶著龐大的車隊、馬隊、儀隊、扈從隊……，作第四次「南巡」。跟隨乾隆一起出發的，有太后、皇后、五阿哥、小燕子、福晉、爾康、紫薇、晴兒、容嬤嬤、蕭劍、紀小嵐等人。
一路上，發生了許多意料不到的事情。小燕子依舊「膽大心不細，有勇沒有謀」，熱心有餘，思考欠周。鬧了不少笑話，也闖了不少禍。來到浙江海寧，乾隆帶著眾人前往陳邦直府上，陳邦直乃乾隆民間摯友。當晚，陳府擺出盛宴款待他們，陳家四個女兒；知琴、知書、知棋與知畫，亦與眾人相歡。其中，最出色的十七歲小女兒「知畫」，聰慧秀麗，才華出眾。太后越看越喜歡，心中也打起了如意算盤，沒想到這個算盤竟成日後小燕子與永琪之間永難磨滅的傷痛。
來到西湖，乾隆和許多鶯燕燕在喝酒作樂。其中有一個絕色女子，清秀絕倫，姓夏，名叫「盈盈」，乾隆恍然似曾相識。盈盈扣弦而歌，歌聲曼妙。乾隆突然宣稱，要封盈盈作妃子，此事震驚了太后和皇后。皇后心急如焚，更寫了一封萬言書，向乾隆懇切力諫。乾隆覽信大怒，皇后百口莫辯，剪去一頭青絲。乾隆更是怒發如狂，讓人立刻送皇后回北京。乾隆遣走了皇后，情緒大壞，決定提前結束南巡的行程。
回到北京之後，太后竟查出小燕子是乾隆年間被抄斬的方家後裔，小燕子的生父因一首「剃頭詩」被處死刑，小燕子與乾隆竟有一場血海深仇。召來眾人，小燕子也在這樣的狀況之下，知道了自己的身世。太后因永琪身份特殊，心有顧忌，不敢把小燕子的身世告訴乾隆。但為了簫劍做了最大的犧牲。此後，知畫橫在永琪小燕子之間，帶來一連串前所未有的風暴。
此時，緬甸進軍攻打邊疆，情況告急。乾隆派永琪和爾康率領大軍前往平定亂事。突如來的狀況，讓眾人的恩恩怨怨，暫時拋開。永琪和爾康到了雲南，意外見到前來相助的簫劍，三人異地重逢，欣喜若狂，決定攜手為國家打一場漂亮的勝戰。
這場戰役，打了好幾個月，在後緩不繼，和天候不佳的情況下，永琪爾康簫劍漸漸落敗。在一次激戰中，爾康身陷重圍，身受重傷。當永琪和簫劍奮不顧身的追來搶救，卻在一片烽火和遍地屍骨中，找不到爾康的身影。直到三天後，永琪簫劍清理戰場，才赫然發現爾康面目全非的屍體。永琪在狂怒狂悲的心情下，決心奮力死戰，一場死戰，居然把敵人打得落荒而逃。清軍大勝。
永琪帶回了勝利，也帶回了爾康的屍體。紫薇如遭雷擊，完全崩潰，怎樣也無法接受這個事實。爾康的父母福倫夫婦，更是哀痛欲絕。紫薇憑著與爾康之間的心靈感應，她相信爾康並沒有死。
紫薇決定到雲南邊境，千里尋夫，小燕子和永琪也決定千里伴紫薇。晴兒和蕭劍這次重逢，恍如隔世，決定一起高飛遠走。誰知事機不密，知畫告訴了乾隆有關小燕子的身世。乾隆找來永琪，詢問真相，永琪坦誠相告。乾隆幾經思量，終於將方家當年的文字獄，整個調查清楚。且忍痛答應孩子們的離去。於是小燕子和永琪離開皇宮，陪伴紫薇走上尋夫的漫長路途。簫劍和晴兒，也在乾隆默許下，一起離開了。
走了四個月，走到雲南邊境。歷經千辛萬苦，眾人終於找到爾康，紫薇和爾康再見，恍如隔世。經過幾次鬼門關的考驗，上蒼終於將紫薇的爾康完整還給她了。
小燕子等人到了大理，卻找不著含香和蒙丹。但是，看到雲南山明水秀，又是簫劍繼父的家鄉，大家就在大厘落地生根了。他們知道，只要人間有愛，天上人間，都是天堂！這是一個嶄新的開始，他們學著去做一個「普通人」。

GREAT SERIES! A + + +!!!
| This series is just GREAT! I know a lot of people didnt want to watch the part three due to the changes in the casts. I, myself, at first didnt want to watch it with the same reason as many people out there: changes in casts. But learn how to accept the new casts! Okay, so the first one or two tapes kind of bored me out, but Im GLAD that I decided to continue on. The series got SO SO much BETTER that I stayed up late at night to watch it. The casts weren't good?! They were all great to me. XYZ changed from a carefree lazy into a more mature woman. And her relationship with Leo was just WOW! They have the BEST chemistry. The third part was not as carefree/funny as the first two. It's more emotional... and Huang Yi did a great job at crying and many other things. You'll find yourself feel like crying or crying at most of the scenes when she was crying. This series is a MUST WATCH. I still love this series even though I watched it like what...? a year and some months ago? |

Ghastly atrocious!!
| I was not expecting much when I started to watch this series due to all the negative reviews I've heard and read until I got into yesasia.com. So I decided... well some people are just negative so I will just give it a chance and I should not be bias...I wished I had listened to them. Part 4 was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!! There were many contradictory and inconsistent compared back to the original first two series storyline. There were also a lot of pettiness that was not neccessary. The characters have changed from what had made them infamous to begin with and what was once a dramtic happy story had turned sour. The acting was mediocre with the exception of Zhou Jie and Huang Yi and the woman who played the Empress because they did a good job of their roles but everyone else was just too wishy-washy and too much overacting. This series is definitely NOT worth watching! |

bad bad bad
| Ok not being bias against the characters at all. its terrible!! dont buy it, u will regret. the story is boring and WEIRD! the director spent a whole 1st chapter in talking abt the 4 main charaters cleaning books! there are too many arguments between couples. and leo koo is bad at acting as the king's son. too stiff, and doesnt suit the baldness on his head. the king is horrible, he doesnt care abt his own children anymore. Previous one was more funny and heart warming. well little swallow was ok, not bad, it is really difficult for her(dont knw the new swallow's name) being like vicki zhao, as she is not. her acting was quite close to vicki's. i thought she was pretty, though i am vicki's fan. the worst thing i thought, was that they changed a lot of ppl, the queen, the concubines, 'yong mama', and little swallow's brother too.etc dumb story! er kang becomes a ghost sort of. its really weird when u have old charaters there and new together and they talk about their past in hzgg 1 and 2 , when the new charaters did not even exist in hzgg1, 2. i watched the first 3 chaps. and couldnt continue, but had too as i paid for it!!! |

i don't understand
| this t.v series is good and sad but i don't even understand what they say. i don't understand chinese that good. since i can't find one with english subtitle, can someone please be nice to me and help write out what each character say for me? i know this take lots of time and i'm willing to pay you the price you ask for. please someone |

I thought this part three is really silly, the plot isnt that great, not to mention that the king is not like the old one, seem like he's another different person(he destroys the image of the old king(kind, gentle, resonable)! Haung yi portrayal is nothong to compare to vicki, vicki is more natural while haung yi trys to hard to be cute(probaly its because of the director because every scence where she makes joke r whatever the camera focus on to each face to show that she could make people laugh But to me its soooo lame and ridiculous) leo ku is way far behing alec su, his face doesnt have any emotional(except for the crying scene of him n haung yi). as for zhuo jie he did superb!propably he did better than part 1 n 2:) Overall i think this series isn't that great story line too tedious and lame. |
