Released in 1977, the film adaptation of Proof of the Man was immensely popular with audiences. Its popularity can be explained by its depiction of a hot issue in Japan - Japanese children of mixed descent and their unfair treatment in Japanese society - blended with a compelling and touching mystery. The story was later adapted into two television films in 1993 and 2001, one of them starring world-renowned actor Watanabe Ken, and two television series, one in 1978 immediately following the film's success and the other in 2004 starring popular actor Takenouchi Yutaka.

東京のロイヤルホテルのエレベーターでジョニー・ヘイワードという黒人男性の死体が発見され、英語に堪能な棟末刑事が捜査を担当することになる。棟末はホテル付近の公園から遺留品と見られる西條八十の詩集と麦藁帽子を発見し、インターポールを通じてN.Y.27分署に捜査協力の依頼をする。一方、ファッション・デザイナーの八杉恭子は、ひき逃げ事件を起こした最愛の息子・恭平をN.Y.へ逃亡させるために心を砕いていた。黒人の殺人事件とは別件で行方不明者の捜索依頼を受け持っていた棟末は、その捜査の過程で八杉恭子と出会い愕然とする。恭子こそ、棟末の父が死亡する原因となった女だったのだ。やがて、彼女の名前はジョニー殺害事件の捜査線上にも浮上する…。 ■映像特典：予告編
