Released in time for the 2009 National Day celebrations, Qiu Xi is remarkably the first film in seven years for 5th-Generation director Sun Zhou (Zhou Yu's Train). Although the title (literally meaning "The Joy of Autumn") may sound like one of those old-fashioned farming village dramas, Qiu Xi is actually an engaging espionage thriller set in 1949 Guangzhou, where the Kuomintang forces struggled in desperation before their eventual retreat to Taiwan. The film stars acclaimed actors Guo Xiaodong (The Warlords), Sun Chun (TV's Towards the Republic), Golden Horse Best Actress Qin Hailu (Durian Durian), and Jiang Yiyan (City of Life and Death) as the titular character, Qiuxi.

Losing the war against the Communist, Kuomintang is barely in control of Guangzhou. In desperation, the KMT forces kill and persecute countless civilians suspicious of Communist connections and that drowns the entire city in panic and pessimism. When his plan to destroy the radio broadcast station with bombs is sabotaged, KMT intelligence official Xia (Sun Chun) begins to suspect that the Communist secret agent who has infiltrated their operations is his longtime friend, Yan (Guo Xiaodong). A deadly trap is set...
