'모든 길은 로마로 통한다(The most famous road that leads to Rome)'고 했듯, 이 길 역시 로마로 통한다. 이 길로 로마의 군대가 진군했었고, 로마는 제국의 중심이며, 이 전 세계의 주인이다. 그러나 그 권력에도 불구하고, 로마의 멸망은 다가오고 있다. 어느 누구도 미래를 예측 할 수는 없는 것이다. 인간은 권력에 좌우되며, 죽음이 정의를 대신한다. 정복당한 나라의 통치자는 신하를 볼모로 맡겨 버리고, 그들은 예전에야 어쨌건 간에 노예나 인질신세가 되고 만다. 로마의 정복자들로부터 헤어날 길은 없는 것이다. 권력과 부패, 인간의 비참함과 노예라는 이 구조를 바꾸기란 불가능으로만 보였다. 그런데 3년 전, 기적이 일어났다. 유대의 한 사내가 인류를 해방 시키려고 십자가에서 죽었다. 그 사람은 사랑과 속죄에 대한 말씀을 널리 전했으며, 얼마 후 십자가는 오만한 로마 독수리 대신 그 자리에 앉게 됐다. 이 이야기는 영원한 삶에 대한 갈등의 이야기이다. 서기 64년의 뜨거운 여름, 네로(Nero)라고 불리는 반 기독교인인 황제가 군림하고 있었다. 그 때 제14군(14th legion)이 승리하여 로마로 금의환향 하였고, 그 부대의 사령관은 마커스 비니키우스(Marcus Vinicius)였다.
