本劇以屈原幾度重用，幾次貶官，最終因國滅而沉江的命運為主軸，演繹了春秋戰國時代群雄紛爭，強勝弱敗的悲壯故事。
公元前316年，秦國欲先滅楚而後併吞六國。深得楚懷王重用的屈原，一心致力改革舊幣，強楚興邦，秦國不惜重金賄落以靳尚、南后為首的楚國王公貴族，使屈原陷于孤立，群臣失和。屈原滿腔愛國之情，治國方略屢次受挫。由於楚國內政的各種弊端，貴族階層中的腐敗，六國會盟對秦作戰最終失敗，歷史無情地淘汰了楚國。
