Famed composer Joe Hisaishi, who has provided the orchestral scores for numerous films from directors Takeshi Kitano and Hayao Miyazaki, brings his talent for audio images to Quartet, a narrative film directed, co-written and scored by the veteran composer. The film tells the tale of a university string quartet - Akio (Yoshihiko Hakamada), Tomoko (Sachiko Sakurai), Daisuke (Nao Omori), and Ai (Kaoru Kukita) - whose lone collegiate competition results in a disaster. After graduation, the quartet splits up, only to reform three years later with the intention of competing as a quartet once again. Their reacquainting isn't a smooth process, but thanks to numerous gigs and lots of practice, a bond of friendship and teamwork forms. But when the competition finally arrives, one of their members receives a counter-offer to join a famous orchestra. Will this lone member choose to further their own career or work towards the common good of the string quartet? Quartet was filmed in a unique style where the musical score was completed first and the film's acting and direction later determined by the music's audio rhythms. The result is a unique and entertaning film that moves to the exacting musical rhythms of master composer Joe Hisaishi.
