Rahtree: Flower of The Night aka : Buppah Rahtree (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Thai writer/director Yuthlert Sippapak attempts to tackle the ever-difficult genre crossover, the horror-comedy, in Rahtree: Flower Of The Night. What seemingly starts off as a teen love story, Rahtree tells the story of rich kid Ake, who is infatuated by the class beauty, Rahtree - a gorgeous but reserved young girl. Eventually his attempts to woo her pay off and the couple spends a heated three-day vacation together. However, no sooner do they return, when Ake reveals that his seduction of Rahtree was nothing more than a bet between himself and a couple of his wealthy friends. He deliberately avoids the girl until his parents pack him off to boarding school in England.

Before he leaves, Rahtree reveals that she is pregnant and Ake forces her to get an abortion. But he has already left by the time she returns home, where she later starts to bleed and shockingly dies. Here the film shifts dramatically, as Rahtree's body refuses to behave like a normal dead body and haunts her apartment, forcing the landlady to hire all manner of experts and exorcists to try and rid the apartment of the troublesome spook before all her tenants move out. A bizarre combination of genres, Rahtree is a worthy, and most certainly unique, entry in the canon of new films from Thailand, signaling the emergence of a new creative force in Asian Cinema.

Professional Review of "Rahtree: Flower of The Night aka : Buppah Rahtree (Hong Kong Version) "

January 9, 2006

Though Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak drew international notice with his debut film, the action comedy Killer Tattoo, it is the genre-mashing Rahtree: Flower of the Night (a.k.a. Buppah Rahtree, a.k.a. Scent of the Night Flower) that has made him a major player in Thailand. With its utterly unique blend of horror, tragedy, romance and comedy, even by Thai standards, there is nothing out there quite like it. The film was a major box office success in its native land, effectively ending Sippapak's days as a low-budget filmmaker, and drew positive responses on the international festival circuit. And now, after numerous delays stalling out the long rumored UK release, there is finally a legitimate English-friendly release thanks to the new DVD release from Hong Kong.

Buppah Rahtree is an isolated, self-contained girl. She's at the top of her class in medical school, but has no friends and carries a secret, tragic past with her. She does, however, have an admirer in Ake, a wealthy young man who was drawn to her when she turned down the advances of his best friend. Rahtree eventually opens up to Ake but what should have been a happy ending for her turns progressively more tragic. Ake turns out to be an entirely amoral cad and Rahtree, pregnant from their lone weekend together, is pressured into an abortion and abandoned in her run down apartment where things turn septic. She dies and is undiscovered for at least a month. And this is just the set up which, I'm sure you will agree, is rather unusually tragic for a film most commonly billed as a horror comedy.

Things really get rolling after Rahtree's corpse is discovered. The police arrive and she is shrouded according to local custom, but when they try to remove the corpse, it simply refuses to go, twitching wildly until the police drop it and run screaming from the room. Rahtree's body may be dead but her spirit is very much alive, very angry, and it will not leave without a fight. The film then tracks a succession of unsuccessful exorcists, who are run through the building at the behest of the apartment manager desperate to stop her remaining tenants from fleeing the obviously haunted building. The situation is further complicated by the return of the guilt-stricken Ake, who turns up on the scene desperate to make amends, completely unaware that Rahtree has died.

Of the many elements Sippapak fuses together here - he has shown a consistent desire to experiment and push genre boundaries in his films - it is the horror and tragic elements that work best. Though the blood comes in bursts rather than waves, Sippapak clearly knows what he's doing with all of his key imagery hitting home powerfully, particularly Rahtree's ghostly flashback to the night of her death. The tragedy element is also strong with both Rahtree and Ake standing as intriguingly - and realistically - flawed characters. They are both very well written and performed, giving the film a degree of character depth uncommon in genre film.

On the negative side the film's limited budget is apparent on a few occasions, though not distractingly so. What will be more of an issue for most are the comic elements. For those unfamiliar with Thai comedy, what you need to know is that it is very broad, very loud, and very culturally specific. For those unfamiliar with Thai culture, it can take some getting used to and many, quite frankly, never will. As a consequence, even though Rahtree: Flower of the Night is rather restrained by Thai comic standards, many will find the shifts in tone jarring rather than funny.

The DVD release is a bit of a mixed bag. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the transfer is clear of dirt or damage, but seems a bit murky at times. The subtitles are clear enough, but are better described as workmanlike than nuanced, and the disc is entirely barebones with no special features to speak of. Still, the film has earned its reputation and will be of great interest to many cult film fans, and the disc does a competent job of getting it out there.

Comes with the horror and the laughs
Sometimes reminding me of the mix and match neighborhood in Kung Fu Hustle and sometimes of William Friedkin's 70s classic The Exorcist, Rahtree: Flower of The Night sums up as a horror movie I watched with a smile on my face.

It all begins with a reflection by the main male lead, Ake (Krit Sripoomseth), who introduces the viewer to a mysterious girl called Rahtree (Laila Boonyasak). Ake attempts to win the interest of the girl, who is both an object of desire and a person veiled in secrecy because her good looks somehow don't match with her odd behavior. After he succeeds and wins her love, he reveals that his efforts to win her love are connected with a scam by a group of boys betting on who will be the first to spend a night with her. Even though Ake admits his insincerity towards Rahtree, he also knows that he truly loves her and tells her he won't leave her. Yet, the promise of Ake who comes from a well-to-do family is soon broken when he is sent to an overseas school. Rahtree on the other hand comes from a difficult background and is often molested by her unscrupulous stepfather. Unable to tolerate the ongoing abuse and a life without Ake by her side, Rahtree commits suicide after getting rid of her perverted relative, but remains to haunt the world in her new demon self.

Rahtree: Flower of The Night's touch of horror is set in motion by the wrapped up corpse of female protagonist Rahtree coming back to life to get her vengeance. Sometimes taken by surprise by the film's well-timed shock effects, I was equally intrigued by the film's over-the-top happenings and its colorful supporting cast, including a block-headed waiter, an incapable priest and his assistant, and a couple of memorable gay transsexual hairstylists. Skillfully balancing between horror and humor, Rahtree: Flower of The Night is a successful multi-genre film that knows well how to shock the audience while at the same time keeping everyone amused.

Drama...Horror...Hilarious Comedy! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
For an Asia horror film fusing drama and comedy into a successful whole, “Rahtree: Flower of the Night” fulfills this odd genre mix exceptionally well. Beginning with moody emotional introduction, Dunrongsgup a male student falls in love with pretty but strangely remote Rahtree. These two students slowly faze into friendship and quickly into sexual liaison, leaving Rahtree pregnant. Dungrongsgup exploits his sexual encounter to friends, but when revealing Rahtree’s pregnancy to his parents, gets quickly sent off to England to study. With Rahtree also sexually abused by her own father, its not a pretty picture. Rahtree has an abortion and afterward left in an apartment block to recover, with Dungronsgsup telling Rahtree he’ll return after his study. Drama and sad romance soon turn to horror when the local apartment block community, including two large lady hairdressers and two shop sellers, hear Rahtree as been found dead in her apartment room, having bled to death due to a botched abortion surgery. The locals attempt to move Rahtree’s shrouded body, but to their horror the shroud comes to life refusing to let anyone near. In fact anyone entering Rahtree’s room 609 (the naught missing, showing only a 69!) gets the pants scared off them. A ghost!

Sounds’ chilling doesn’t it. But the local community desperately trying to rid the new ghost on the block are very funny. The natural half-wit locals are hilariously portrayed (Dave and the lady hairdressers are a scream!) without ridiculing the horror elements. Firstly the police investigate Rahtree’s death, but soon get the willies and run away. A local soothsayer attempts to exorcise Rahtree’s ghost but is more afraid than the police. With the landlady nervous and frustrated as her scared tenants vacate, imminent help is needed. Like a light from Heaven two Catholic priests arrive to settle the ghostly dilemma. The landlady warns that Asian ghosts aren’t like Western ones, but a priest assures her that if the ghost’s not a ‘Phantom of the Opera’, they’ll be fine. With spoof exorcism parodying movie “The Exorcist”, Rahtree curses and vomits like any Linda Blair possessed ghost in a Taiwanese horror spoof can; two priests retreat Rahtree’s unsettled spirit room - very quickly. Soon the apartment block is empty, until the Ultimate Exorcist arrives. Ghosty skits aplenty here is a Taiwanese horror-comedy of ground breaking originality. Brilliant!

Breaks the horror film mold Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Rahtree" is a hugely entertaining movie, telling a classic story of a girl, wronged by a rich young man, who dies only to return as a vengeful ghost wreaking havoc on anyone who dares to approach. Although I suspect the budget was tight for this Thai film, the production values are high and this story is told seamlessly and effectively.

To call the cast of this movie "colorful" doesn't do it justice. This is one of the most unusual casts I've ever seen on film, but they do a terrific job, maintaining a high energy level throughout and bringing this horrific tale to life with welcome doses of comic relief.

I don't watch a lot of horror films because I tend to find them predictable and formulaic. Let me assure you that "Rahtree" breaks the mold; it is anything but formulaic. I truly enjoyed this film and I recommend it highly to everyone.
