YesAsia Editorial Description
It takes guts and sheer determination to alter your life trajectory, especially when you're at the top of the game. But that's exactly what Rain did. In November of 2007, Rain left his longtime nest JYP Entertainment and started his own company, J. Tune Entertainment. And now, after establishing worldwide fame through his much publicized 2007 world tour and Hollywood exposure in films like Speed Racer and the upcoming action flick Ninja Assassin, the multi-entertainer returns to home base to release his long-awaited fifth album poignantly titled Rainism. By adding "-ism" to his name, the title promotes a new ideology and concept that capture the essence of who he is and what he represents.
Taking full control of the album's entire production, Rain reveals his true colors through his own composition and choice of lyrics, in particular Love Story and September 12th. Composed and arranged by Choi Hyung Joon of V.O.S, Love Story is a pop R&B number that talks about the ugly side of love, surprisingly coming from the singer's own experience. In the song's music video which features actress Ha Ji Won, Rain extends his talent net by orchestrating the full storyline. Moreover, the star upgrades his dance moves by collaborating with world-famous choreographer AJ who previously worked with stars like Usher and Justin Timberlake.

OMG!
| I dunno WHY I listened to other peoples' hype. People told me this album wasn't good. YEAH, RIGHT!! It's effing GREAT!! OMG!!! I especially like 더 끌려 track 8. That song is banging!! Seriously. All his other songs are super good, too though. Too bad his U.S. debut was delayed because of what happened a couple summers ago. Anyway, don't take my word for it; get out ther and buy it. NOW!!! OMG!! Stop reading already!!!! YES!!! 10 out of 10! 2 thumbs up!! 5 stars! All that good stuff!! GO!! |

Not bad.

The criticism first. Rain's vocals leave more to be desired, as usual. Actually, one does not desire anything at all. It is clear that Rain is no singer, he's a dancer and a performer. Even JYP acknowledges that, in a slip of tongue in a press conference. The album's songs, as per always, includes some English lyrics, however, his pronounciation is not all that clear. I believe he should cut that away completely, as it was clear that he could not succeed in the English-speaking world with his first language as Korean (remember the cancelled concerts?). Cut away the overly large dreams, and focus on the main task of capturing Asia. China would be a glitch. I will, however, acknowledge that the saving grace was the production, which would not be surprising given the funds he would have at hand. The production of the album is amazing, equalling and in some instances, surpassing that of a mainstream American album. He also made the right decision of minimalizing his vocals, an instead choosing fast songs to sing as opposed to ballads, of which there were but a few. By letting the instrumentals do the work, he masks his ineptitude at holding a tune and staying in pitch and produces a true work of art. Kudos to those god-like producers, they made the album worthwhile. |

rain working on his english skills
| I like this CD. I nearly all of Rain's CDs and while this isn't my favorite, it's pretty good. I'm not a fan of his slow songs this time around, but the fast songs make up for it. Turn Your Head and Rainism are pretty good and I love My Way. I especially like how he added some English and Chinese versions of some songs. I don't know, if you're a Rain fan, you'll like it so I say try it. Show Rain some love :) |

Asian special?!
|
What about the Japanese version of Rainism and Love Story? Including them would make this a better collection! Anyway, most of the songs are slow. Reminds me of Vol.2. Apart from Rainism and Love Story, I only like one other track- 'Love is'. The rest of the album is so so. I tend to press the skip button... I like his last album 'Rain's World' more. More (fast) dance songs would have been good. Maybe next time? |
