Rainbow Song (DVD) (Limited Edition) (Korea Version) DVD Region 3

Director Kumazawa Naoto might not be a name that immediately grabs attention just yet, but his fifth film, Rainbow Song (a.k.a. Niji no Megami), is certainly catching eyes thanks to the backing of producer Iwai Shunji. Iwai also helped out with the screenplay under his pen name San Amino, along with Sakurai Ami and Saito Miyuki. Like many of Iwai's acclaimed works, Kumazawa's Rainbow Song is about youth, and there are quite a few familiar young stars onboard. Heartthrob Ichihara Hayato, the brooding lead from All About Lily Chou-Chou and rising actress Ueno Juri (Swing Girls, Nodame Cantabile) star in the film, along with Aoi Yu (Hula Girls) and Aida Shoko (Alice's mother in Hana and Alice). As can be expected, Rainbow Song features beautiful cinematography, though more traditionally presented than Iwai's works, and remarkable, restrained performances. Kumazawa is assured and precise in his direction, creating a subtle and sincere story of youth, romance, and missed opportunities.

Harried production assistant Kishida Tomoya (Ichihara Hayato) spends most of his working hours making mistakes and being yelled at. Recalling his college days, he messages a picture of a rainbow to his longtime friend Aoi (Ueno Juri), only to find out later that she has passed away in a plane crash. Tomoya and Aoi met in college, developing a close relationship that seemingly went beyond friendship, but neither ever voiced their true feelings to each other. Devastated by the news of her death, he thinks back to their days together, revisiting the love they never had.

기시다 토모야(이치하라 하야토)와 아오이(우에노 주리)의 만남은 최악이었다. 토모야는 짝사랑하고 있는 여자에게 다가가기 위해 그녀와 같은 레코드 샵에서 일하는 아오이에게 말을 걸고 대학 영화연구회에 속해있는 아오이는 자신이 촬영하는 영화의 필름값이 필요해서 토모야를 위해 사랑의 큐피드가 되는 일을 받아들인다. 그러나 어이없게 실연당한 토모야는 아오이가 속한 영화동아리에 억지로 휘말리게 되고 아오이가 감독하는 영화에 주연배우로 출연하게 된다. 아오이는 토모야의 연애상담을 해주기도 하고 아오이의 여동생 카나(아오이 유우)와 함께 여름 신사 축제에 가기도 한다. 이윽고 두 사람은 하잘것 없는 일부터 장래에 대한 고민까지 서로에 대해 많은 대화를 나눈다.

졸업후 영상 제작회사에 입사한 아오이는 미국에 유학가기로 결심하고 토모야는 아오이의 추천으로 아오이의 회사에 취직하게 되지만 토모야는 아오이가 마음속으로 키워온 연정을 눈치채지 못하고 그녀를 떠나 보내게된다. 그러던 어느 날 비행기 사고로 죽은 아오이의 소식을 알게된 토모야는 회사에 있던 아오이의 비품을 돌려주기 위해 그녀의 집으로 향하고 언니의 유품을 정리하고 있는 카나의 안내로 아오이의 방에 들어선다. 그리고 토모야는 아오이에게 부탁했던 러브레터를 읽다가 그녀의 마음속에 키우고 있던 자신에 대한 사랑을 알게 되는데...
