Ray는 김진표 1집 [열외] 프로듀서 및 작곡, 김진표 2집 '구름여행', 김건모 6집 'A Moment' 등을 작곡한 실력파로 이번 솔로 앨범 역시 전곡을 자신이 직접 작사, 작곡을 했다.
Ray, 그의 음악을 들으면 일단 낯설다. 한 명의 보컬에 드럼, 기타와 베이스, 키보드로 이루어진 여느 밴드와 구성은 같은데 그의 음악은 그간 귀가 익숙하게 들어온 소리가 아니다. 록과 같이 악기들의 비트가 강하게 들리지만 그 안에 실려있는 목소리의 리듬이 그간의 록과는 다르다는 것을 증명해준다.
그의 음악은 country song을 기반으로 하는 모던록이다.
악기들이 만들어내는 깔끔하고 군더더기 없는 심플한 멜로디가 건조한 듯하면서도 터져 나오는 그의 감성이 묻어나는 목소리와 조화를 이루면서, 다른 록음악과는 차별되는 Ray만의 음악이 완성된다. 직접 프로듀서를 맡은 자신의 첫 앨범 [지금 여기서]에 담아낸 노래들은 하나같이 한국에서는 새로운 장르에 대한 도전들로 Ray 자신은 “나는 나 자신에게서 자연스럽게 우러나오는 그 어떤 것에 의해 살아보려고 했을 뿐이다.”라고 말한다. 여기에 대중가요를 비롯해서 김민기의 '공장의 불빛' 운동가요까지 범 시대적이고 다양한 장르를 아우르며 대중적이면서도 자신만의 음악세계를 구축해가고 있는 뮤지션 ‘정재일’이 공동 프로듀서로 참여해 그의 도전에 힘을 실어주었다.

nice debut~

to someone who enjoys acoustic soft-rock, i've always had trouble finding this genre in korean music; it seems to be mostly in american music. ray kang's sound is, as one might expect, very american-inspired, for better or worse. to hear this genre in korean (and english, as some of the tracks are completely in english) is a unique experience. ray's voice is husky and soothing, and the music matches his voice well, never overpowering or understating. my only disappointment was a lack of variety, as some of the songs sound a little similar to one another. nonetheless, it' a high-quality debut that should be checked out by those who are fans of this genre. |

Very Nice Soft Rock Album

Ray Kang is a unique artist in K-Pop today due to the style of his music. There aren't many alternative/acoustic artists out there today as the genre is not as popular in Korea as it is elsewhere. If I could compare his music to current acts out there, I'd have to revert back to Western artists who seem to have more of an influence to Ray Kang than any other local musicians. All the tracks are either of the soft rock, alternative, or acoustic ballad genre and all are very well composed. Not to mention, they are all sung very well, as the other reviewers had pointed out--he does has a great soothing voice! I must caution and emphasize once again that the songs run a similar theme allthroughout. There are no surprise melodramatic ballads nor hard-pumping techno beats anywhere on this album. Variety is not observed and it is very specialized accordingly. |
