Product Information
導演 : 李翰祥
Director: Li Han-hsiang
Winner of Best Picture at the 7th Asian Film Festival, Rear Entrance is a moving tale about a childless woman (Shanghai superstar Butterfly Woo in her triumphant screen comeback) who cares for an emotionally battered girl (future teen idol Wang Ai-ming). The drama made a star of the lovely Li Hsiang-chun (who plays the girl's mother), and demonstrates director Li Han-hsiang's mastery of emotional nuance in a genre quite different from his other 1959 masterpiece, the Chinese ghost story Enchanting Shadow.

What will become of little Ah Ling?
|
In the hands of a less assured director, "Rear Entrance" might have been nothing more than tawdry melodrama. In the hands of Li Han-Hsiang, "Rear Entrance" becomes great cinematic art. Butterfly Woo and Wang Yin play Mr. and Mrs. Tsui, a childless middle-aged couple; Mrs. Tsui, who works at a school surrounded by small children, deeply yearns for a child of her own. Across the alley from their home lives little Ah Ling (Wong Ai Ming), who lives all but abandoned by her skirt-chasing father and unloving stepmother. Mr. and Mrs. Tsui take the sad little girl under their wings and shower her with gifts and love. Eventually, her father and stepmother agree to permit the Tsuis to adopt little Ah Ling. While Mr. and Mrs. Tsui and Ling form a loving family, Ling pines for her birth mother, Mrs. Hui (Li Hsiang Chun). Mrs. Hui is a twice-divorced, but still young and beautiful woman who longs to be reunited with her daughter. When Mrs. Hui shows up at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tsui, sparks fly, tears are shed, and hearts are broken. What will become of poor Ah Ling? The sensitive performances of Butterfly Woo and Li Hsiang Chun ensure that these big emotions are played out with surprising subtlety. The film's original soundtrack was not preserved, so in this reissue of the film we get a film score played on an electric keyboard, we get all new dubbing of the actor's voices, and we get all new sound effects. Amazingly, the new soundtrack works quite well and rarely distracts. The film's black and white cinematography is nothing short of spectacular. Watch for cameo appearances by director King Hu (as an ant exterminator!) and Betty Loh Ti (as a neighbor) and a striking performance in a small role by Margaret Tu Chuan. I really can't say enough good things about this powerfully moving family drama. It is a perfect marriage of a great director, a thoughtful script, and a talented cast. Buy it! |

Commendable restoration of a great classic
|
"Rear Entrance" is a heart warming, touching story of a childless middle aged couple's search for the child that they couldn't have and its bittersweet consequences that ensued. Hu Die, brilliant star/actress of Chinese cinema from the 1920s made a great comeback in the early 60s by her well-modulated performance in this film. Shaw's star director Li Han Shiang, taking a departure from his usual costumned epics, directs with his assured hands and guided the production to a well deserved BEST PICTURE award at the Asian Film Fest that year. Classic film fans will most probably rejoice in the superior visual quality of this black and white movie, marred only by negligible out-of-sync dialoque bits, it is amazing to know that the soundtrack was completely recreated for this restoration. Hopefully Celestial will dwelve deeper into the Shaw vaults for more great b&w films to re-introduce to a new genaration of filmgoers in their future DVD releases. |
