YesAsia Editorial Description
A scathing look at the dehumanizing effects of war, the 1966 film Red Angel is widely considered to be one of the crowning achievements of director Masumura Yasuzo's long and prolific career, which included classic titles like Blind Beast and All Mixed Up. In charting the spiritual and sexual decline of a young, inexperienced field nurse thrust into the hell of World War II, Masumura crafts an emotionally complex drama with characters who earn sympathy even as their actions repel. Typical of the director's works, Red Angel does not shy away from sometimes frank depictions of sex and violence, but a thoughtful screenplay from Kasahara Ryozo and a moving performance from Japanese screen legend Wakao Ayako prevent the film from falling into the realm of exploitation. Red Angel transcends its lurid subject matter to emerge as a powerful and poignant antiwar masterpiece.
On the front lines of the Sino-Japanese War, Nurse Nishi Sakura (Wakao Ayako) spends her days amputating limbs and her nights attempting to avoid sexual assault at the hands of her own patients. Surrounded by wounded soldiers with no will to live and a once-brilliant head surgeon (Ashida Shinsuke) who has become a morphine addict, Nishi desperately seeks any means possible to alleviate the suffering of those around her. Her growing love for the drug-addled doctor may hold the key to his redemption, but at the cost of Nishi's own sexual martyrdom. As the horrors of war close in around them, Nishi fights to reclaim Dr. Okabe's humanity without losing her own in the process.

Grim tale of nurse at war
|
"Red Angel" is an unsparing tale of a Japanese nurse at the front lines of Japan's war in China during World War II. There is no attempt here to lionize the Japanese war effort; instead, director Masumura Yasuzo delivers an honest, gut-wrenching assessment of the evil effects of this bloody conflict upon Japanese troops. Wakao Ayako is effective as a young nurse exposed to the brutal conditions of war. Preyed upon sexually by the troops in her care and used inappropriately by the doctor she serves, she struggles to retain her humanity, reaching out in love to the doctor. "Red Angel" is unrelentingly grim, yet remains compelling throughout as the viewer roots for the nurse to escape this tragic war with her life and her integrity intact. Only during one scene between the doctor and nurse does the movie verge on pretension. Apart from that scene, Director Masumura keeps the film firmly rooted in the real lives of real people fighting for survival. I can recommend this film highly. I also recommend that you also get a taste of the extraordinary versatility of Director Masumura by watching his entertaining film, "A Lustful Man". |
