Mifune leads a peasant revolt
|
"Akage" (a.k.a. "Red Lion") is a brilliant tragicomedy featuring one of Mifune Toshiro's most unforgettable performances. He plays a stuttering, dim-witted farmer who has enlisted in the Imperial Army. He is duped by his commander into pacifying his hometown with promises of debt forgiveness and lower taxes, promises which never will be kept after the Imperial Army siezes control. Mifune blunders his way into his hometown, pretending to be a big shot, and through sheer chutzpah manages to rally the locals to his side. Iwashita Shima delivers a finely nuanced performance as the woman he loves. Mifune then leads the locals in an effort to take over the town from the corrupt powers-that-be. Mifune is simply superb as the simple-minded former farmer. Director Okamoto Kihachi nicely balances the humor, tension, and action in this tale of intrigue and betrayal. I recommend this entertaining film very much. I also recommend Imamura Shohei's film "Eijanaika" (available from YesAsia), which tells of events that immediately preceded those depicted in "Red Lion". |
