Promoted as an experimental group with a dual concept, Red Velvet has shown their vivid, bold image with the red-oriented Ice Cream Cake and Dumb Dumb, and their classy, toned-down style with the velvety "One of These Nights" and Automatic. However, the concepts are not unique to Red Velvet since most of K-pop groups have their own "red" and "velvet" sides to showcase various music styles. What makes the group special is the idea of combining the two concepts to form a brand new style. Two years since their debut, their red side eventually meets the velvet side in the third mini-album Russian Roulette.
The title track "Russian Roulette" (Track 1) is an exemplary track which best exhibits the "Red Velvet" spirit. Starting with the repetitive "lalala…" sounds and playful arcade tunes, the funky retro EDM jam sounds like another "red" song that emphasizes powerful beats. However, the melody becomes catchy in the pre-chorus and the hook "heart b-b-beat" dominates the song along with the heart-pulsing percussive background and rich electronic pad sounds. Though more synth effects are involved in the last chorus, the song doesn't turn noisy. Inspired by the classic cartoon duo Itchy and Scratchy from The Simpsons, the song's music video is full of violent scenes of the members trying to kill each other. However, the black comedic elements and the members' emotionless acting styles perfectly suit the playfulness of the song and form an atypical schoolgirl crush image.
Continuing the title track's funkiness, the retro pop dance song Lucky Girl (Track 2) creates a funny musical atmosphere thanks to its jazzy brass-driven tunes decorated with random clapping and carnival tunes. However, when compared to the innovative "Russian Roulette" which surprises listeners with new musical elements throughout the song, Lucky Girl's composition is too repetitive. The entertaining video game tunes of Bad Dracula (Track 3) evokes the title song's trademark arcade sound. The lively dance jam is an interesting love tale about a mischievous vampire who falls in love with a man.
To exhibit Red Velvet's signature dual style, the new jill swing number Sunny Afternoon combines dance-pop music and their distinctive smooth R&B style. However, the two styles do not blend together leading to awkward transitions between parts. Its soothing parts do create a sunny vacation ambience that links the song to the acoustic country pop-style Fool and the tropical house jam Some Love, both of which feature breezy melodies evoking a holiday mood.
Mixing two different styles while retaining their characteristics is hard but the songwriting team strikes an excellent balance between Red Velvet's funky and velvety sides for Russian Roulette. Moreover, musical effort is shown in the compositions which connect thematically unrelated songs through their moods despite their contrasting styles. However, the line distribution problem among the members still exists. Wendy and Seul Gi are the soul of Red Velvet, and Joy also helps a lot in establishing the group's unique vocal color. Only Ye Ri and Irene fail to stand out due to their average vocal skills and limited lines. I hope they will return with the same high-quality music as a quintet, rather than a trio.
