Return Of The Phoenix is yet another masterpiece from prolific director Li Han-hsiang. An imperial minister Cheng Pu (Ching Miao) is faced with a quandary. He's getting old and his daughters are still not married. Elder daughter Shueh-yeh (Elizabeth Chuang) is so ugly no one wants her. Younger daughter Shueh-wu (Li Hsiang-chun) is beautiful but Mrs Cheng refuses to let her marry before her elder sister. The drama unfolds when Cheng decides to marry Shueh-wu off.

Terrific comedic Huangmei Opera Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Return of the Phoenix" is a delightfully comedic Huangmei Opera about mistaken identity. Family patriarch Cheng Pu (Ching Miao) wishes to marry his beautiful second daughter Shueh-Wu (Li Hsiang Chun) to a handsome young scholar/warrior played by Chin Feng. However, Cheng Pu's wife and ugly elder daughter have other plans. The fat and homely elder sister sneaks into Chin Feng's bedroom and fools him into believing that she is the sister that he is going to marry. Chin Feng is horrified and makes an excuse to depart. Cheng Pu's hideous friend, a royal nephew, has sneaky plans of his own; he wants to marry the beautiful second daughter. Hilarious confusion ensues. As you would expect from a film co-directed by Li Han Hsiang, "Return of the Phoenix" looks glorious and the story works wonderfully well. While the film's story is slight by typical Huangmei Opera standards, the music is surprisingly fresh and catchy. Chin Feng and Li Hsiang Chun make perfect romantic leads. "Return of the Phoenix" is very highly recommended.

Entertaining & worth watching Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A hilarious comedy that will bring out bursts of laughter naturally especially the funny and brilliantly worded confrontation dialogue scenes between the eldest daughter (played by Elizabeth Chuang) and the royal nephew (played by the late versatile Chiang Kwang Chao) on their wedding night, the hotel scene after running away from the bandits' invasion and at the end during the whole family reunion. Excellently directed by the Kao Li and the late well respected and renowned Li Han-hsiang. Don't miss it!
