2007年2月13日 Vincy has great potential
It's hard not to praise Vincy's effort on 花無雪. As a newcomer, her singing skills and emotion control are very good as featured in this song.
What she needs now is to work out her own unique style. Because she is not blessed with an unique voice (unlike singers like Ding Fei Fei, Kay Tse or Cass Phang), she sounds uncannily like a few female singers. Her voice is naturally quite weak like Joey Yung when she was a newcomer in 1997. In order to keep her spot in the competitive HK music industry, Vincy must work on her own unique singing style soon.
黛玉笑了, as a second plug is not a wise choice - Vincy sounds like Sandy Lam trying to sing like Cass Phang. I would have plugged either 天使明明在此 or 傾斜樂園. The superb arrangements of them give a mysterious and an exotic sound, respectively. Even though she sounds like Ivana Wong in 天使明明在此 and very much like Sandy trying to sing like Faye Wong in 傾斜樂園. The music arrangement would have fixed the problem!
一時倦了, a fabulous ballad and, 踩鋼線, a nice R&B track are my personal favourite. But again, she should like a "non-Cantonese speaking" Ivana in 一時倦了 and Sandy in 踩鋼線. She sounds like a mix of Sandy and Joey in 愛情鳥. 我是你的樂與怒 fun track but Vincy sounds like Joey! 暈船浪, a fast track but Vincy sings like Sandy (again!) 賣火柴的女孩, a nice slow track, the only other "Vincy" track besides 花無雪.
Vincy has potential and the song quality in 花無雪 is above average. I hope she finds her own singing style soon!

Having gone through hard times in life usually inpires artists produce better work. I don't normally follow celebrity news. But I was aware of Gigi's high profile break-up with her ex. I have to say, her latest Mandarin album and Cantonese album following her break-up are her best work to date.
The original Cantonese version of "Love Song For Myself" is my favourite song for 2006. Like many people, I have been hurt by love. "Love Song..." touches my heart and confirms to me the importance of self respect and not being too hard on yourself even when love goes wrong. Although the narrative is no longer as intense as the Cantonese version (this time she is not talking about her loss in love but comparing another girl's break-up aftermath with hers), I love the Mandarin version too.
Apart from "Moving House", "Day Dreams" and "The Loneliness Is Too Transparent", which are pretty average, I pretty much love all the other songs on the album. "Thank You For All These Times" is probably my favourite track. You can feel her sadness and emotion, not too heavy, but yet intensely touching. "Someone" has similar effect, but a bit sadder. In "A Person Who Doesn't Care About Time", you can feel the helplessness, hopelessness and sadness all mixed into one. The arrangement of "Love Does Really Hurt" is heavier with sorrow mood, it sounds more like a classic sad love songs, yet Gigi performance gives a sense of "be strong and move on" feel. "Beginning Heart" (composed by Ivana Wong) is a fine track too but Ivana's Cantonese version "Fortune" is a bit better in all levels. "Disappear" serves an important role in preventing the album from being "just another sad love songs" album. Gigi's "half singing, half chanting" style of singing in this track makes this song unique and fun! "Beijing Summer" is a nice addition to the album but the lyric is not as well written as the original Cantonese version.
This is one of the best Mandarin albums in recent year, Get a copy!

2007年2月2日 Classy album with mature sound
Personal taste is a funny thing. Many fans love "Electic Girl" and "Single". For me, "Unlimited" is one of her best albums since "Make Up". The 2 albums have one thing in common - very few K-songs! Opening track "(He) Kiss Every Girl" is a fun track that sets up the tone of the album - the ups and down, thoughts and feelings of a strong, independent woman. I disagree with those who say Miriam is not a good singer - great singers don't just master their singing skills and hit the notes, they bring feelings and emotions out of the songs. As a whole package, Miriam is a definitely above average. Thanks to the great Lin Xi, every song tells a wonderful story in "Unlimited": lost love in "She's Succeeded But He Hasn't" & "Yik Shu Said", strong-headed woman in "Determine", realising love is transient in life in "Water, Moon, Mirror and Flower" & "My Survival Principles" and live for the moment in "I Can Only Dance" and "If I Could Be In Love Forever". Very classy and jazzy arrangements bring mature sound in every song. Quality-wise, this is no dobut one of Miriam's top 3 albums. Get a copy if you love music that speaks to and touches your heart! -

The arragement of "The First Day" reminds me of "Philippines Maid Love Song" (it's fresh and there's whistling too). It's a very special track that depicts an excited pregnant mum looking forwards to the day her baby being born. "Unexpected Side Branch" depicts her worries about the future after her baby is born (in terms of her career and how other people would judge her). I love these 2 tracks so much because they are so unique, different and non-K-song! "Back Window Confidant" is about the ghost of a dead woman who is unaware that she has died. She looks through the back window of her boyfriend's house where he's looking at photos of them being together. She then realises that she is dead. A very interesting track indeed. Her re-mixes are full of energy but I must say not full of surprises! Besides the 3 brillian new tracks, I recommend "Part of the Beautiful Bunch n" & "Come With Me In This World".

2007年1月27日 What the **** is this?I thought I was playing smart waiting for the second version. Unfortunately, EEG's tactic is worst than ever these days! They delete 2 tracks in the original CD and add 1 new tracks and a 2-track DVD for the 2nd version. This is unacceptable! Maybe I should wait for the 3rd version or not buy any Joey Yung CD at all from now on!!

"The Bright Club" has very meaning lyric: it implies that people who are 'different' should come out of the closet. A very encouraging and inspirational song written by HOCC and Wyman! Unfortunately, the re-mixes are only passable, none of them are as good as the original version. Also, HOCC needs to work harder on keeping up with the good quality of her previous great rock songs, despite winning many awards, "The Bright Club" is not HOCC's best, I think "Angel Blues" and "Turning Into Butterfly" were her best compositions to date.
On the other hand, "The Bridge of Sighs" is another best composition by HOCC. Great melody and meaningful lyric. It's only January but I know this is one of my Top 10 songs in 2007 already. It's such an underrated song :( It didn't do so well in many HK pop charts because her record company plugged another song at the same time! For some reasons, her Mandarin plug "The Secret of Sad City" did better. Well "The Bridge of Sighs" is definitely a #1 song in my heart!

No more sad love songs!
It’s a good move to ‘marry’ Taiwanese composers and Hong Kong Lyricists. The end product ‘Growing Short Hair’ is like a breath of fresh air. Moving away from teary sad love songs, first plug ‘A Love Song To Myself’ which depicts ‘Staying strong when love’s gone’ attitude is definitely my favourite. Other tracks sound fairly upbeat and easy-listening, with a very positive outlook on life and love. ‘Growing Short Hair’ (composed by Cheer Chen) is a fine track and Gigi sounds very natural in it. Second plug ‘Summer in Beijing’ is also a pleasant surprise from Zhang Ya Dong, the string instrumental adds special layers to the song, it sounds classy but not too much. One of my other personal favourites is the funny titled ‘Feeding Me Biscuits’, the Chinese instruments and background noises of kids reading and laughing add innocence, fun and hope in this song, very special. I also love 'Ticket For One', it's like a much more upbeat, mature version of 'Love Myself' (lyrically). The final track ‘A Love Song To Everyone’ sounds odd despite it's good intent (a song with bits and pieces of her previous Cantopop hits mixed together, it’s meant to be a small conclusion of her journey as a singer for 10 years). I would probably have written a new song mentioning as many song titles of her previous hits in the lyric (like Tarcy Su’s track 4 ‘Outline’ in her latest album). However, all in all, this is a great album to have, especially if you’re over heavy sad love songs (and don't mind Cantopop with Taiwanese sounds). -

With so many Cantopop albums that focus on K-songs, Kay's Ksus2 is like a fresh breeze. 跟我走 tells the story of a young singer's wishes for listeners who really appreciate her music, Kay sounds very cute in it! 菲情歌 is a song about a lonely house maid who yearns for love, human touch and emotional connection, a very touching and meaningful song. My favourite track is 愁人節, a song reminds us that there are many people in the world who are less fortunate than us due to the circumstances out of their control (e.g. born into famine or illness, etc). It's time to step out of our selfish world and pay some attentions to others. -

2006年8月2日 Ksus2 with heart and soul亡命之徒 is a response to the tragedy caused by the mini-bus driver's speeding in HK, a very interesting track sound- and lyric-wise. 我愛茶餐廳 is like a snap shot of dining in an average restaurant (who needs fancy restaurant where everyone is so uptight?). The song reminds us to seize the day and hold on to those small enjoyable moments in life and that money and being rich is not everything. If you really like music that both touches your heart and makes you think, Ksus2 is it! Go get a copy! -

2006年6月4日 願我可以學會放低你I was touched and hooked by 願我可以學會放低你. The song title was inspired by what Jack Twist told Ennis Del Mar in the film Brokeback Mountain 'I wish I knew how to quit you'. The song lyric and arrangement are so filmic. One of Denise's best song ever! I like all of the other songs, expecially 'Her Song'. It's sligtly experimental. 圓滿 is a track I've loved since Dec 2005. The only criticism on this 'album' is that strictly speaking, this is only a EP - one can hardly call 6 Cantonese songs + 2 Mandarin tracks (which are covers of 2 of the Cantonese tracks) an album. However, the DVD short film kind of make up for the lack of new songs. I hope her next album will actually be a FULL album!

2006年6月4日 Ladies in Red is okayMany reviewers seem to dislike this album. I think what we have to keep in mind is that most of the performers are actresses, not professional singers. I think they did a fine job and it's an okay album. Having said that, I do think the best track overall (song quality + performance) is Mariam's 有過去的女人. Stephy's Let It Flow is quite a good track too. I also like 幸而.

2006年5月12日 I love 'Jade Loves...' & you'll love it if you lovIt has been 15 months since Jade released her last album. The wait was long but it’s all worth it. ‘Jade Loves...’ is her best album so far and her performance has improved a lot, no more yelling or over the top emotions. What we hear is Jade’s very natural and smooth singing sound, with very controlled emotions, very nice indeed. As for the song quality, it’s top! The best thing about this album is: no more cry-baby sad love songs! First plug 粉筆字 touches my heart, quietly and softly. Many people can probably relate to the lyric. 玉石樂隊 is a very jazzy, lively and fun track and her performance really shows how much she enjoyed recording the track. In turn, the listeners can feel the impact, which is: very happy to hear Jade's singing voice. RING MY BELL is her best English track so far. You can tell by this song that she has done a lot of vocal training. She sings like a native English speaker, and with attitude and class, well done! 三毛流浪記 is another great track, great melody and interesting lyrics, easy-listening yet meaningful. Jade composed 讚’s melody herself and it’s quite a nice track. I love 蟬 a lot because the arrangement is a little experimental. Her ‘Zen’ singing style matches the lyric and the concept of the song really well. 差一分鐘(十時) sounds a little retro (like some 80s/90s Japanese songs), which I sometimes like. In this case, I love it! My recommendation in order: 蟬, RING MY BELL, 粉筆字 & 玉石樂隊. -

2006年5月11日 Great concept album, it really 'makes sense'!After hearing Karen’s 眾生緣 in May 05, I was waiting for her new album. Cantonese or Mandarin, I didn’t mind. 眾生緣’s a funky song and I wanted to have it. Boy, she really made us wait, one whole year! Karen isn’t a brilliant singer but she’s creative and sexy & that’s her selling point. As ‘concept’ album goes, 如果沒有你 is pretty good. I can sum up this wonderful album as followed: (如果沒有你) one can be single and still enjoy a good life 24 / 7 (甜美生活) (24 hrs) (AMPM). Sleeping in a single bed (一個人睡), one becomes more sensitive to one's own senses, such as taste (一口一口) and smell (薄苛), touch (手) and temperature (Fire). Living in one’s own private world and letting imagination run wild (野) is fine because the sky won’t fall down (天下大同). All songs are of high quality and no single one is bland. I enjoy every track. But my personal favourite Mandarin tracks in order are: AMPM, 如果沒有你, (2 very touching and melancholy tracks) & 甜美生活, 一個人睡 (2 very easy-listening and sweet tracks). Get it!

2006年5月7日 Great concept but the album is only okay......(conOn the other hand, I actually think Andy and Patrick complement each other a lot better in track 1 than the guys in 4 and 7. The song is quietly touching, which I like.
Liza and Kelly's track is nice, I just think that the French monologue at the beginning of the song a bit pretentious and unnecessary.
Jordan and little Marie's track 6 is a very cute song. Unfortunately, Marie's not-so-sweet voice really has ruined the song. They should have tried harder and found a girl who could actually pull off that song, rather than some rich friends' kid.
Last but not least, Gia and Rammie's track is not so bad, unlike some critics, I actually like the fact that it's in both Cantonese and Mandarin. It highlights that the 2 women in the songs are so close but yet so far - emotionally, geographically and where they come from. My only complain is that Rammie's singing is a bit off.
All in all, I can only give this album 70%.
Recommended in order: Tracks 3, 5 & 2.

2006年5月7日 Great concept but the album is only okay......I agree with many critics and reviewers, the song quality has let this album down, or maybe we expected too much? As Lin Xi said in an interview, he would've like a 'brokeback' song performed by 2 male singers in this project. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. Anyhow, I don't think the HK pop music industry is quite ready for a duet love song between 2 men yet. Back to the ablum.
Track 3 is my favourite - the melody is the most complicated one out of all, and Eric and especially Stephanie did a great job. Try singing it at Karaoke, then you'll know what I mean. Because it's not of 'K-song' quality, I doubt that this song would be very popular in the charts.
I also love track 5, it's like a light breeze - it's easy-listening. Wilfred and Pui Wei did a good job. Also, the lyrics are not as serious and 'preachy' as tracks like 4 and 7 - despite sung by great singers like Jacky, Eason and Paul, are not at all enjoyable. I don't like Track 7, Eason and Jacky sound like they are competing to be the main man, pretty irritating (maybe because they didn't actually record in the same studio together).

2006年3月11日 Not quite the most wanted, but better than past feThe quality of Joey's past few albums were not great, K songs after K songs. I got them all because I have been a Joey fan but I raraly listen to them these days. Her latest album 'Ten Most Wanted', although not her best album in my opinions, definitely an improvement from her last few albums! It will stay in my CD player for awhile!
金銀島 is a very catchy song to kick off the CD. 摩登時代 has a great concept but the lyricist has failed to explore the concept to its fullest! 堂堂男人 is kind of a cute song but too sweet and girly for my liking. Although 赤地雪 was plugged back in December 2005, is still my favourite track. Not because of it's lyric, but because I love the fact that Joey has given it another go at a song with heavier 'rock' feel and actually succeeded. Her last few attempts such as 'R U ready 4 me?' was a disaster! 跟珍芳達做健身操 is one of the most stupid song I've evey heard, her producer made a really bad choice including this track! I have to skip it every time I play the CD. 流淚眼望流淚眼 is okay, bit of a K song but essential for the sale of the album. 舌尖開叉 is one of her better fast tracks in a very long time. 上次坐飛機 is what I would call 'easy-listening' music, very Sunday afternoon. 最後的茱麗葉's chorus final part reminds me of 何韻詩's 花迷戀, but the whole song is not as good as 花迷戀 and finally, I do like the meaning in 冬眠, although the melody is a bit bland, the lyric is nice.
All in all, I do think 'Ten Most wanted' is a must have for Joey fans!

2006年2月16日 She's got a lot of potential.I was never a fan of Cookies. As a 20-something guy, they were just too girly for me. But when Cookies dissolved and Kary became the lead singer for Ping Pung, I started to keep an eye on her! It was a pity that Ping Pung has only released one album so far. But, I am happy for Kary. This girl has a lot of potential.
Okay, she might not be the prettiest girl on earth but she seems to have character and lots of attitude on stage (but down-to-earth in real life)! And she can be very sexy on stage and when she sings rock songs, she is convincing as a rock chick (unlike many girly female pop singers in Hong Kong who try singing rock songs but sound awful). She is also a good dancer! She has the whole package, very versatile musically and performance-wise! Some newcomers I also like have nice voices and sings well (e.g. Janice, Ivana Wong and Jolie Chan). But they are a bit too girly and/or wholesome for me to be whole-heartedly in them. Fiona Sit was blessed with 'connection' and a few good songs. But I prefer Kary 100 times more!
I honestly like pretty much every song in Kary's debut album (except for the re-make of 'With A Girl (now Boy) like you') - never like that song which is originally sung by a guy!
I fell in love with 'Every Sentence of "I Love You"' the very first time I heard it. Her third Cantonese plug after 'Every Sentense...' and 'Love Genius' is called 'Loving You Becoming Hating You'. A safe Commercial song but not the best. Track #5 to #9 are all great songs! But I particularly like #6 'Toy With Me' and #9 'A Letter To My Enemy In The Game Of Love'. 'Toy...' sounds pretty funky at first and then you get hit by the story-telling like lyric; 'A Letter...' seems flat melody-wise but the lyric is a well constructed drama! The 2 Mandarin songs are pretty good too.
Watch out for the bonus DVD, great dance performance, great interpretation of other singers' songs. The first 2 songs were brilliantly - better if not as good as the original singers ('Not The School Princess' and 'Male and Female In One Body').
Get her a go, it's worth it!
