　　「九一八」事變後，東北的地方軍閥陸振華（寇振海飾）帶著一家老少逃亡到上海，在法租界定居。他的九姨太雪琴（王琳飾）為人專橫跋扈，將八姨太文佩（徐幸飾）母女逐出陸家。文佩和女兒依萍（趙薇飾）失去經濟來源，日子貧困窘迫。依萍找上門向父親討生活費，與雪琴發生衝突，遭父親鞭打，就此立下了復仇之志。

　　依萍和如萍（林心如飾）扮演一對同父異母的姐妹，但二人性格完全不同，可是卻同時愛上書桓（古巨基飾），愛得死去活來，他就在這兩姐妹之間周旋著。杜飛（蘇有朋飾）愛上了如萍時，希望一心一意地想用真誠感動她。

K-a Yun makes you cry every time she appeared. Her father, Deputy Lee, though not a major character, touches your heart none the less. The Commander he so unshakenly loyal to, showed the world how fine matured Chinese actors could be. His 9th wife is mean and spiteful. Her younger daughter's her replica. Her young son sometimes looks remotely cute but when he went grab the whip, you just want to strangle him. Do Fai is very silly in the beginning but soon you'll find him incredibly sweet. His head is only filled with concerns and love for Ru Pin who, however, is the only character I find irritating. She seems to be there, always waiting for a chance with Ho. Ho though suffocated Yi Pin with his intense love and protection but has a soft spot for Ru Pin. Yi Pin's role is perhaps more challenging but Vicki handled it perfectly. She's not only beautiful but sings as well. Her mother portraits a typical Chinese woman in her days. Finally my favourite is Fon Yu, a woman with a heart of gold. Make sure you don't miss this great drama!

An extremely powerful drama excellently executed by a top class cast led by the beautiful Vicki Zhao. Except for the 2 slightly weaker penultimate epistles, the rest of the other 44 epistles are solid, enjoyable, touching, impressive and brilliant. This success no doubt lies with the talented writter. Her wonderful script, moving stories, creative dialogues and each distinctive individual character are all fully supported by everyone involved. This is definitely one of the very best dramas of all times. Make sure you'll never miss it!

Is it realistic ? Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
This is a very good TV series. Viewers will find it very exciting and entertaining.

I must, however, doubt that the story is realistic. From what I understand, Qiongyao wrote and screenplayed the story. This story took place in China in the 1920s and 1930s, before the Sino-Japanese War. Qiongyao is a prolific writer born in 1938. So she couldn't have lived through or eye-witnessed the events similar to those in the story. This story is strange in that it reflects a lot about the old family traditions in China and at the same time, present-day ideas are also found in sex, love and marriage.

In conclusion, if the viewer wants to watch it for pleasure and entertainment, fine. Bit if he or she uses the story to try to understand life in China in the 1920s and 1930s, think more than once.

I saw this drama when i was in 6th grade, it was great. I started crying on epi 2. The storyline was very touching. Its something you can relate to. It wasnt just about love and "oh he loves me but i dont love him" ordeal. This drama touches the war time in china when the chinese was at war with the japanese. It also touches on issues relating to family, issues that are taboo and are mostly not spoken about. I have this an 9 out of 10 because Ruby Lin's acting wasnt that great and kind of fake. Thats the only flaw i find in this book turned movie. Also this drama has an excellent soundtrack if you are into slow songs.

This movie I have, but it's translated into Hmong, which isn't that good. I probably missed out on alot of scenes, but I really like it. The movie it's great. I love all the songs in it, and it's a great drama. Hehe. Hrm. I recommend it. It's one of my favorites.
