This is an unusual love story that ended sadly. Anita played a highclass prostitute and Leslie was the 2nd son of a very wealthy family. He fell for her during a lunch social with friends at the 'club'. Naturally the feelings were mutual and they were an item much to the family's disapproval as they considered it an 'uneven' match of social status. When it came to the arranged marriage of Leslie by his family, the couple made a pact and decided to commit suicide together so that they could with each other 'till eternity'. Sadly things didn't go according to plans and Anita turned up 50 years later as a ghost to search for Leslie to keep their vow. The truth emerged after she met a newspaper editor and his girlfriend who helped her to track Leslie. Events like these are very common back in the 1930s. Many rich men begets concubines thro highclass prostitutes/club dancers, etc. Nothing ordinary to have 3 or 4 wives if you could afford it. Of course social status and 'saving face' are the norm if you happened to be the sole heir to the family fortune. Although these women, many were in the trade because their family were poor and they have to support/repay debts or being sold to pimps as teenagers, were generally good and the only way out were to 'secure' a man willing to love them as they are and eventually give them a better life. Anita deserved the award for best actress but Leslie's part was played down a little. A lot of chemistry between these two. For the younger audience who thought the opera/social status/call-house bit were fiction, they are very real. I bought the digitally remastered version but the colour was quite dark, very disappointed. The sound production were good. Certainly a movie for those fans of Anita and Leslie. |

This is a narrative love story of a young courtesean looking for her reincarnated lover 50 years after they "supposedly" committed suicide... only to find out that the reason why she did not meet him is because they did not die together. It's historial, and wonderfully done. You will enjoy it much as i did. Don't forget to buy your copy too. |

great anita!!!
| i saw this movie last weekend and i have to say that is one of the best movie that i ever see. anita plays really really good. all her emotions let you know how she feels at the moment. anita was even better than leslie although leslie was good too. leslie looks very handsome (a little feminim) but this is that what i like.and the song at end from anita was so emotionally that makes you cry. i think this is THE movie that everyone has to see if this person wants to see anita and leslie together. fantastic!!!!!!!!!! |

...
| this movie is quite boring. i wanted to go to sleep afterwards. BUT!!!! both leslie and anita pass away. so this will be a great choice if you want to see some collaboration between these 2 stars. leslie looks really young and handsome. anita as always, being herself. there are two other characters, they play an important role because they help anita around. but leslie and anita totally cover them. anyhow, this is worth buying, but can only be watch once. |

Did life imitate art?
| A moving ghost story that stays with you long after you've seen it: and it was great seeing it again after all these years. Leslie is gorgeous but Anita steals the show with her range of understated roles as the other worldly tragic heroine. One of her last interviews said she preferred comedy but this tragic role is her best. Ironic too that Leslie did in real life what he failed to do here, but didn't have to wait 50 years for his soul mate's return. The music is haunting too.... |
