YesAsia Editorial Description

Winner takes all including the Best Actor Award in Kim Ki Duk protege Jang Hoon's stylish action blockbuster Rough Cut (a.k.a. A Movie Is A Movie). Appearing in his first production since completing his military service, Korean Wave star So Ji Sub makes his long-awaited screen comeback four years after the hit TV drama I'm Sorry, I Love You turned him into a household name throughout Asia. Still the lonesome brooder, So Ji Sub faces off against television heartthrob Kang Ji Hwan (Host and Guest, Hong Gil Dong) in this reality-blurring actioner about two actors dueling it out in front of the camera to see who steals the most spotlight. Just for the record, So Ji Sub and Kang Ji Hwan ended up sharing the Best New Actor award at the 29th Blue Dragon Awards for their performances. Attracting over a million theatergoers in its first week of release, Rough Cut is the second non-self-directed film produced by Kim Ki Duk after Jeon Jae Hong's Beautiful.

Hounded by the media everywhere he goes, movie star Soo Ta (Kang Ji Hwan) has a temper that matches his paycheck, and a bent for trouble. Shooting for his latest production, a gangster film, comes to standstill after he beats up another actor. Too invested in his role, Soo Ta recruits real-life gangster Gang Pae (So Ji Sub) to become his new co-star. Gang Pae agrees, but on one condition: all the violence in the movie has to be real instead of staged.

Professional Review of "Rough Cut (AKA: A Movie is a Movie) (DVD) (2-Disc Special Edition) (Korea Version)"

January 31, 2009

Grumpy auteur and outspoken critic of the Korean film industry Kim Ki Duk puts his money where his mouth is by continuing his recent assault on screens. Here, he follows his own directorial outing Dream and protege Jeon Jae Hong's excellent Beautiful which he produced, with Rough Cut for which he wrote the screenplay as well as serving as producer. The film was actually directed by Jang Hoon, another of Kim's young charges, who previously worked as an assistant on The Bow. Although it certainly shows the hand of his mentor, with Jang at the helm, the film is a far more commercially friendly prospect, not least since it boasts two major heartthrobs in the lead roles in the form of So Ji Sub, a household name after the television series I'm Sorry, I Love You, here making his screen comeback after military service, and Kang Ji Hwan, who made his name with Host and Guest and Hong Gil Dong. The film certainly proved popular at the box office, probably more so than all of Kim's own efforts put together, attracting over a million viewers in its first week of release. It also managed to win over the critics, with So Ji Sub and Kang Ji Hwan deservedly sharing the Best New Actor prize at the 29th Blue Dragon Awards.

The film revolves around a cunningly ironic premise. Bad boy actor Soo Ta (Kang Ji Hwan) finds his career threatened after beating up another thespian on the set of his latest gangster drama, sending the media into a frenzy. All the other performers in the industry refuse to work for him, and everything seems lost, until one night in a bar he runs into real life gangster Gang Pae (So Ji Sub) and his entourage. The two men hit it off, albeit in deeply antagonistic fashion, and Gang Pae agrees to star opposite the actor in order to save the film, though on the condition that they perform all of the violent scenes for real. Although this results in some impressive footage, soon both of their lives are changing, and not necessarily for the better.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Rough Cut is the fact that it consistently avoids taking the predictable route. Despite the premise, it never patronises the viewer through tiresome "film vs. reality" gags, and manages to prevent itself from ever becoming the kind of hollow nonsense it lampoons. A large part of this is down to Kim's superb script, which is fiercely intelligent and well plotted, providing a perfect balance of gripping plot and sly industry critique. Thankfully, not too much of his well publicised bitterness boils to the surface, and his vision of film production and all its supposed glamour, whilst exposing the artifice and hypocrisy, also shows a genuine understanding of the medium. As might be expected, there is a fair amount of symbolism, including mirror images, split screen work, and an inevitable injection of religious iconography. Whilst the film does play upon the brutal reality of Gang Pae's profession compared to the wannabe stylings of Soo Ta, its commentary upon actors and acting is far more complex than a simple castigation. Indeed, the relationship between the two protagonists is a tense and fascinating one, with the balance constantly shifting as they battle not so much with each other as with themselves. As such, the film is arguably more of a character drama than anything else, and a deeply engaging one at that.

Not all of the credit for the film's success should go to Kim, as Jang's direction brings the script to life without ever dwelling too much on its more pretentious side. Certainly, he shows a far more measured approach than his mentor, and although the film does have its share of offbeat moments, it generally eschews the obscure in favour of a tight pace and a skilfully worked tautness. Certainly, the film was designed to entertain as well as making viewers think, and he manages to attain this difficult balance without pushing things too far either way. There is a fair amount of action, mostly in the form of fist fights between the male leads, and the film is a bloody affair with some startlingly brutal scenes towards the end. The violence is cleverly interwoven into the narrative and never comes across as having been included for mere shock value. Both Kang Ji Hwan and So Ji Sub turn in excellent and very physical performances, and help to give the film an intense visceral edge.

As a result, Rough Cut enjoys the best of both worlds, being intelligent and thought provoking, whilst at the same time entertaining and exciting on a more basic level. The union of Kim's cynical sensibilities and Jang's ability to get his hooks into the viewer works wonders, and the film scores highly on all grounds, standing not only as one of the best Korean films of 2008, but surely as an indication of further greatness from both teacher and pupil.

A Gangster is a Gangster
Kim Ki Duk protege Jang Hoon makes a well-deserved splash with his directorial debut Rough Cut, the most commercially friendly film ever to bear the prickly auteur's name (as producer and screenwriter). Playing on the movie-within-a-movie premise, Rough Cut pits a gangster-like actor against an aspiring-actor gangster for one sprawling brawl of a blockbuster. Essentially a character drama sandwiched between two layers of gangster action, the film combines visceral fighting with a strong screenplay, upturning the grit and glamor of both moviemaking and the gangster's life.

Cocky, angry, and out of control, movie star Soo Ta (Kang Ji Hwan) is famous for playing gangster roles onscreen and throwing violent outbursts off screen. After sending another co-star to the hospital, public opinion turns sour, and no actor wants to work with him. Running out of options, he decides to recruit a real gangster, Gang Pae (So Ji Sub), to be his new co-star. A mob right-hand man who once dreamed of becoming an actor, Gang Pae has his hands full trying to run the show while his boss is in jail, but he accepts Soo Ta's invite. The catch: they must fight for real in the action scenes.

The stage is set for a big-screen showdown between small-screen stars Kang Ji Hwan and So Ji Sub, and both actors answer the call with strong performances befitting of the Best Newcomer nods they've been picking up at the Blue Dragon, Baeksang, and Korean Film Awards. Steadily climbing the ladder of television stardom in the last few years with dramas like Be Strong, Geum Soon, Capital Scandal, and Hong Kil Dong, Kang Ji Hwan proves to be a versatile presence on the big screen, and he remains relatively free of the idol baggage that comes with other popular television leading men. After portraying a disillusioned evangelist in the 2005 indie Host & Guest, Kang manages to be both infuriatingly callous and understandably human as a surly superstar who experiences some semblance of self-awakening comeuppance.

Returning to screen a good four years after I'm Sorry, I Love You, So Ji Sub comes with exactly all the distracting buzz that Kang Ji Hwan doesn't - post-military comeback, pseudo-music career, Korean Wave fandom. Fortunately, he also has the acting chops to back up the fanfare. As the brooding gangster with a love for the movies, So Ji Sub still wears angst like second skin, droopy eyes and all, and his calmly menacing tortured hero act creates an effective contrast with Kang Ji Hwan's paper-tiger show. The two actors' final fight in a field of muck peels away two levels of stardom for a compelling climax that is down and dirty and triumphantly well-earned.

Director Jang Hoon balances the action and the narrative elements of the film well, making Rough Cut the rare action movie that is thrilling, moving, entertaining, and intelligent. Revolving around the crossover between gangsters and moviemaking, Rough Cut offers plenty of fodder for audiences to wrap their minds around, but never lets the premise become a mere device. While parallels are drawn between the real and the cinematic, Rough Cut does not attempt to blur reality beyond the fight scenes. Instead, as the movie progresses - both the actual and the one within the movie - the line between being a gangster and playing a gangster is drawn increasingly clear, perhaps nowhere more poignantly than in Gang Pae's search for respite from his real-life gangster drama... by acting in a gangster movie.

Apology! Corrections! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I want to apologize for the errors I made in my previous reviews for So Ji Sub's series. The correct tittles for his drama series should be: Something Happened in Bali and most importantly, the series I Am Sorry, I Love You instead of Sad Love Story which is the name of another series.

Good Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm a fan of So Ji Sub and Kang Ji Hwan, so I bought this movie when it was first available.. I didn't care that this movie was all about fighting, I just wanted to watch them because they are excellent actors beside their good looks. The movie is bloody, a little sad and funny at times. So Ji Sub looks absolutely attractive with his brooding mood, not to mention his gorgeous built and fighting skills. Kang Ji Hwan is also an excellent actor because he can be serious or comical in his acting. Anyway, you have to watch this movie if you are a fan of either one.

For So Ji Sub: I would recommend watching the following K drama series:What Happened at Bali?(one of my favorite series), Sad Love Story and The Glass Slipper (He has a minor part in this one). So Ji Sub's acting in all three series is excellent. I wish he will pair up with Ha Ji Won, Song Hye Kyu, Son Ye Jin or any other attractive actress in his next drama series.

For Kang Ji Hwan: I recommend watching the drama series:Be Strong, Geum Soon! The series is a little sad, funny, touching and with a good ending. It is also one of my favorites. For his serious acting, you might want to try the series, 90 Days Love with Kim Ha Neul.
