Ru Guo Wei Lai

YesAsia Editorial Description

Earning a mini Mayday label for their wistful and energetic pop rock sound, young Mainland rock band Fusion has been attracting a lot of attention in the Chinese music scene. Signed under Jonathan Lee, the band makes an impressive debut with their first album Ru Guo Wei Lai, produced by Golden Melody-winning producers Cai Shang Wen and Lin Hui Bin. Equally comfortable with youthful bubble gum pieces like Summer run, Mayday-style rock ballads like "If the Future", and alternative rock numbers like "My Love", Fusion caters to both mass appeal and musical credibility in their album, bringing together a wide range of sounds into their music. The band members took care of all the songs in the album except for the last track 123, which is written and composed by A-yue Chang who also features in the song.

Mature beyond their years Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This isn't one of those debut albums that defines a group's sound and paints a complete, self-contained picture, inevitably leading to disappointment (or re-examination) with the second release. Rather, it suggests immense promise and several different possible directions for Fusion, which brings numerous musical colors to this CD without sounding schizophrenic or imitative.

One track here (Track 8, "My Way") too strongly suggests Coldplay (via Mayday), but otherwise it's a pleasant blend of sounds that would seem to date from before these young artists were born: Elvis Costello, Cheap Trick, even the Eagles. Fusion interprets Western power pop in a more natural, lived-in way than does, for example, Japan's Mr. Children.

In fact, there's a maturity to these songs that makes Fusion sound like a group of much older musicians. Why? The writing is quite strong overall and the musicianship is impressive, but what most creates this impression are the vocals. Singer Leakey has a mellow tone, and his notes fade like morning mist off the beach. It's most obvious on the album's most remarkable song, the undulating "If the Future" (Track 4). I fear this effect has partly to do with a prodigious cigarette habit, but for the moment anyway, the consequences be damned. I'm hooked.

Excellent Soft Rock Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Fusion Band" are pretty well a mixture of boy band ballad sound (albeit one vocalist), blended with their own rock instrumentation talent, and have a decent set of 11 easy going songs here. Their music is mostly soft rock/pop mid tempo ballads, and not at all high energy punk or electro synth pop - as they might indicate, by their pretty good and somewhat androgynous punky image here. I could easily say that if your pop interests stem from a lot of the music in the Mandarin and Cantonese charts, you should find these boys a good additional listen.

Their sound reminded me at first of a South African band called "Micheal Learns to Rock", and they are close(ish) to that sound, if you have heard them. The songs are not angsty or edgy, which I don't mind, but I feel that this type of band could appeal quite a bit with mando, canto and Asia pop fans in general, by FB's moderate sound. A little bit melancholic though. Track 1, "Summer Run", Track 3 and "My Way" have grown on me quite a bit with constant listens, and overall the entire album is fairly solid with the songs.

They look good, that's for sure - and each member of the band show a charismatic appeal. Moody, but welcoming. All songs are arranged and performed by the band (electric guitars, bass, drums and vocals) and info about them is all mentioned in the glossy booklet.

This CD is a music only offering, but as like with most of the China CDs, you get a nice glossy lyric booklet with additional photos of the boys here. Nice album, like it and its worth getting! It would be interesting to see what "Fusion Band" do next, and how they may alter and increase their song repatiore. Recommended.
