YesAsia Editorial Description
The film centers on a dedicated student teacher named Choi Hong (Kang Hye Jeong, from Old Boy) who finds herself being propositioned by English teacher Lee Yu Rim (Park Hae Il, from My Mother, the Mermaid), a man who just so happens to be the person in charge of her class! But this is no innocent flirtation. Not one to mince words, Yu Rim simply asks the unsuspecting Choi Hong to have sex! To make matters even stranger, Yu Rim already has a long-time girlfriend. His wandering eye relates to his beliefs about true love: for him, there is no such thing. In his view, dating is meant solely for sexual gratification.
Choi Hong has a boyfriend of her own, a man she one day hopes to marry. But like Yu Rim, she harbors doubts about relationships, a feeling directly connected to some unpleasant experiences in her past. Surprisingly, Yu Rim's methods actually seem to charm her. But as this unconventional romance takes off, will the two cynics realize what the real purpose of dating is? And what about their significant others? Or the whispers in the teachers' lounge about their behavior? Filled with bawdy humor and fun performances, Rules of Dating is one romantic comedy that's not afraid to break all the rules!

Professional Review of "Rules of Dating"
|
The posters for Rules Of Dating include the two protagonists smiling in an oh-so-sly way that might suggest this to be a relaxing romantic comedy. However, the film is really the opposite. In fact, it poses quite a complicated question Should love and sex be the same thing? While some think that they should go hand in hand, it seems that the characters in Rules Of Dating see these things as apples and oranges. The result is a sexy, mature, and unconventional romance that may be too challenging for some. However, its nevertheless an intriguing ride. Rules Of Dating (or known in the subtitles as To Do Or Not To Do) stars Kang Hye Jung (Old Boy) and Park Hae Il (Memories of Murder) as high school student teacher Choi Hung and her counselor Yu Lim. We meet the two at their first meeting when Yu Lim initiates a frank sexual conversation. Yu Lim, who is one year younger than his student teacher, takes a liking to Choi Hung immediately, despite being attached to a longtime girlfriend (who at one point he claims is more like a sister). Meanwhile, Choi Hung is another career woman attached to a rich doctor boyfriend whos never there. Yu Lim decides to pursue Choi Hung, not using pure charm, but by using his power of authority to get her to socialize with the other teachers outside of class, endless sexual bantering, and in one scene, even nearly raping her in a moment of weakness for both. While Yu Lim would probably be sued for sexual harassment a long time ago if he was in America, something keeps Choi Hung from blowing the whistle on him. Is it school politics? Is it a deep, dark secret from long ago? Or is she actually starting to like him? All three of these possibilities play out in Rules Of Dating, but it certainly doesnt gloss over them nor does it find a definitive answer to those questions. One of the best decisions director/co-screenwriter Han Jae Rim makes is to not create charming and likable characters. Instead, the two protagonists are mean, conniving, weak, and at times, just plain frustrating people. However, the performances of Kang and Park are so natural that you cant help but relate to these characters. This is especially the case in Yu Lim, who easily qualifies for one of the most unlikable protagonists in a Korean romance ever, but because of Parks performance, Yu Lim remains a character the audience can somehow be sympathetic to. Its strange how such an unlikable leading man can carry Rules Of Dating, and the answer is in the intelligent screenplay. While it takes a little time to get going, it balances questions about the meaning of relationships, gender politics, and even office politics without being meandering and preachy, despite being slightly overlong for a romance. Rules Of Dating is sometimes an uncomfortable film to watch and the destination is not always satisfying, but it certainly is a lot more entertaining and unpredictable than other Korean romantic comedies. In addition, much credit also has to be given to first-time director Han, who employs a handheld style that can be off-putting, but it effectively places the audience in the perspective of voyeurs. Han doesnt use any special visual flair that many new directors use, but in using a quiet style, he refuses to place any judgments on the characters without making the film emotionally distant. This is a brave decision for a first-time filmmaker who saw a safe way to make a romance and succeeded mostly by taking the other road instead. Despite being under huge expectations to perform big at the box office and a prime summer release date, the film only achieved modest success presumably because of its mature subject matter. However, Han Jae Rim, led by two commanding and brilliant performances, has masterfully crafted a complex romance that manages to be thoughtful, entertaining, and even frustrating. Even though this isnt the type of film to appeal to a worldwide audience, any film that can stir up so many emotions is always a film worth watching. By Kevin Ma |

Wronging Girl in Red Dress
|
One recent weekend I decided to watch "Bungee Jumping of Their Own" and this one, "Rules of Dating"...two romantic dramas that I would sit back and chill out to..wow, did I certainly get some surprises! But, this is why we love Korean films, right? Han Jae-rim and Go Yun-hui's film (it reads "To do or not to do", though, on the opening subtitling) isn't an easy film and doesn't really heed to the rules of conformity that you get with normal drama rom-coms. In fact, some people could dislike this film due to the main character's off center attitudes to romance and love, and some negative sexual content. Still, it is film expression and remembering this you could get something out of it. But, 4 star credits to Hae-Ill Park (as Yu-rim) and Gang Hye-jung (as Hong) in their superb acting and handling such fractured characters, and for keeping some healthy humour in there, contrasting the negative script content. Genuinely, I really hope these two go far, as Hae-Il surely will by "The Host" and continually good movies of Hye-jung's ("Love Phobia"). Also credit to the direction and debate about crucial elements where relationships can be made awkward in difficult places (its difficult to find a good "right" relationship at the best of times); this film being a tale of two school teachers within a government school building. The film's main focus is about a male English school teacher (Yu-rim) who constantly demands passionate relations with a shy fellow school worker (Hong) who the latter was once also expelled from her own school, as a student, for having apparent false relations with an older teacher. This expulsion sparks instant compassion for Hong as it seems she had been 'wronged' by this older teacher's attitude, but this is seemingly played out as history repeating itself as the story between Hong and Yu-rim progresses. Also, each of them already have opposite gender relationships currently on going. For a drama this does have strong adult themes and the male lead is a very difficult guy to sympathize with by his demanding ego, where he even resorts to "a really bad thing" with Hong at one point on a school day outing. No flowers or chocolates here, I'm afraid, he's like a bullet train at top speed. Many a film goer is going to dislike this expressive arrogance. Luckily, the script allows for Yu-rim to have a contrasting nature in his concerns for Hong's past, when she had been ridiculed by the elder teacher and of her expulsion.....it slightly makes Yu-rim a bit more lovable (although it doesn't stop him rudely rummaging through her personal things when he stops at her flat). The girl's past is also suspect and the end result can leave a sour taste in the mouth after you get to those closing credits where "just desserts" ring in your ears. Don't want to say more here, but maybe if Yu-rim observed the DVD cover and Hong's red dress, he wouldn't have used his own green light motivation too much! Overall, I think this film is somewhat in the middle of arty and a standard romance drama, in maybe the same category you could place Korean film dramas of Oh Seok-geun's "Love is a Crazy Thing" (excellent one this! Actress Jeon Mi-seon is wonderful and one to look out more for in the future!) and Hong Sang-soo's "Virgin Stripped Bare by her Bachelors" (yes, absolutely, its a classic!). See what you think if you haven't seen it yet. It does have some good dry and warming humor, also, and these two chalk and cheese couple produce romantic interludes between the lust and intrigue. Try this if you like Korean films : "You Are My Sunshine", "Green Chair", "Love is a Crazy Thing", "Bungee Jumping Of Their Own", "Asako In Ruby Shoes" or "Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors" |

Outside the realms of normal Romance
|
If you are expecting another My Sassy Girl, Please Teach Me English or My Little Bride stay well clear of this film. This movie is not so much a Romantic comedy as a Drama. Watching the two main characters relationship develop is at times uncomfortable. The way Lee Yu Rim goes about wooing Choi Hong would be seen as sexual harassment in the west. There are sweet moments at times you can relate to both Lee & Choi and the storyline keeps all its cards close to its chest so the end result is surprising. But in the end it's not enough to replace the feeling that no matter what Lee does he can never be more than a sex obsessed bully. |

Agreed with the actress decision
| The lead actor in the film is very pushy against the main actress. In the West, that guy will end of in jail. anyway, the storyline is interesting and could really happening in real life. |
