A legendary Category III shocker, Run and Kill reunites the stars of Dr. Lamb, Simon Yam and Danny Lee, as opposites again involved in grisly crimes beyond human imagining. Kent Cheng stars as Fatty, a cuckolded husband who, drunken and despairing, accidentally orders a hit on his unfaithful wife! The next morning she's dead, and Inspector Man (Danny Lee) finds it hard to believe that Fatty had nothing to do with the killing. But when the accidentally hired hit men show up for their payment, Fatty is beaten severely. He ends up befriending a former Vietcong mercenary, who ends up "paying" for Fatty's hit with his own life! When the dead man's brother (a frightening and gleefully over-the-top Simon Yam) shows up, there's only one way to possibly put it...IT ALL GOES TO HELL!
Run and Kill is as harrowing and over-the-top as Category III cinema gets, and proves disturbing, twisted, blackly funny, and even enormously entertaining! Director Billy Tang (who helmed the equally disturbed Dr. Lamb) spares no effort in bringing this dark tale to the cinema screen in of its shocking, sadistic, and downright unbelievable glory. Aside from Kent Cheng's blubbering, amazingly pathetic portrayal of a truly weak and pitiable man, Run and Kill boasts one of the most flamboyant and sickeningly depraved psychos ever in Simon Yam. If you feel that the words "burning" and "child" do not belong in the same sentence, then perhaps this film should be avoided. But for lovers of gutsy, gripping midnight cinema that makes no apologies, Run and Kill should absolutelyl not be missed!

Cheong, a good man to the society and a perfect husband to his family, assigns a Vietnamese to kill his wife when he is drunk. As assigned, his wife is killed and he is blackmailed for money. Then, he runs away to Mainland China hiding himself. Facing the brutal chasing, Cheong decides to fight back his enemies. At last, the battle is over, but his painful experience is never covered......

It will take your breath away

In 1995, I made my first trip to Hong Kong and, after a spending a few days there, took the train for my first visit to Guangzhou. It was an early morning departure and, on the train, this movie -- "Run and Kill" -- was showing. Let's just say that my breakfast didn't sit very easily on my stomach when I got a load of this shockingly, gruesomely violent film. I was wondering just what kind of a country would be showing this movie on their public transport to sleepy businessman, tired grannies, and wide-eyed little kids? I suspect that no one at the railway bothered to vet this film. "Run and Kill" features Kent Cheung as Fatty Cheung, a loving father, cuckolded husband, devoted son, and the owner of a propane gas distribution company. One evening, after catching his wife in the arms of her lover, Fatty drowns his sorrows at a local bar and, when totally blotto, he is misunderstood by a gangster to have ordered the murder of his wife and the man she beds. This drunken mistake leads to a chain of events that become ever more bloody and ever more chilling by the minute. At the center of the mayhem is Simon Yam as an increasingly maniacal Vietnamese hit man. For fans of this ultra-violent genre, movies don't get much better than "Hit and Run". It oozes suspense, action, and a sickening menace that stays in your mind long after the movie ends. The film is slickly-made, although this unremastered DVD doesn't show it off to best effect. Kent Cheng and Simon Yam both create quite an impression, as we learn just what it takes to get this placid Fatty angry. |

Deserving of cult status
|
This movie is so chilling to sit thru. There is so much violence in it. Simon Yam is excellent as a supercool Vietnamese killer. My friends and I sat on the edge of the sofa not knowing what to expect. It is indeed a most riveting movie, worthy of cult status. Collectors should grab this one before it goes out of print. |
