YesAsia Editorial Description

A group of inexperienced players from various backgrounds come together to make history in Run-off, an inspiring story about Korea's first ever women's national ice hockey team. Directed by Kim Jong Kyun (My New Partner), the sports drama is a sequel to the 2009 box-office hit Take Off. Coached by Oh Dal Soo (Tunnel), the ice hockey team includes Soo Ae (The Flu), Oh Yeon Seo (Please Come Back, Mister), Ha Jae Suk (Birth of a Beauty), Kim Seul Gi (Mood of the Day), Kim Ye Won (Horror Stories) and Jin Ji Hee (Boomerang Family). Park So Dam, Jo Jin Woong, EXID's Hani and Yoon Hyun Min make cameo appearances.

South Korea forms their first national women's ice hockey team for the 2003 Asian Winter Games held in Aomori, Japan. Former ice hockey player Dae Woong (Oh Dal Soo) gets recruited to be the coach, but he soon realizes that the team is formed by untrained laymen, including expelled short track speed skater Chae Kyung (Oh Yeon Seo), former figure skater Ga Yeon (Kim Ye Won), housewife Young Ja (Ha Jae Suk) who was a field hockey player, ice hockey association manager Mi Ran (Kim Seul Gi) and high school girl So Hyun (Jin Ji Hee). North Korean defector Ji Won (Soo Ae), who played ice hockey in her hometown, is the only professional player on the team. Can they overcome all the hardships and achieve their dream?

An inspiring sports drama about sisterly love
In 2003, South Korea's first women's national ice hockey team suffered their most humiliating defeat at the Aomori Asian Winter Games. Fourteen years later, they proudly gained their biggest win at the 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games with a silver medal. Kim Jong Hyun's Run-Off looks back on the battle between the North and South Korean hockey teams back in 2003, a hot topic in Korean sports history. South Korea's then ace player Hwangbo Young, one of the most influential ice hockey players in Asia, also drew much media attention due to her background as a North Korean defector.

Run-Off captures the South Korean women's ice hockey team's most significant moments, from their establishment to their first international games. As part of the bid to host the Winter Olympics, South Korea hastily creates the country's first women's national ice hockey team in 2003. Coached by former hockey player Dae Woong (Oh Dal Soo, Tunnel), the team quickly attracts a group of untrained players from various backgrounds, including former short track speed skater Chae Kyung (Oh Yeon Seo, Please Come Back, Mister) who was expelled from the national team after losing an important competition, former figure skater Ga Yeon (Kim Ye Won, Horror Stories), housewife Young Ja (Ha Jae Suk, Birth of a Beauty), ice hockey association member Mi Ran (Kim Seul Gi, Mood of the Day) and high school girl So Hyun (Jin Ji Hee, Boomerang Family). With her professional experience in playing ice hockey, North Korean defector Ji Won (Soo Ae, The Flu) becomes the team's brightest hope for a medal.

The biggest difference between Ji Won and the character's model, Hwangbo Young, is that Ji Won was separated from her younger sister when she defected to South Korea while Hwangbo didn't. The fictionalized alteration deliberately adds a deeply touching and poignant tale of sisterly love to the sports drama. The love-hate relationship between Ji Won and sister Ji Hye (Park So Dam) also reflects the conflicting sentiments between North and South Korea. Yet, the film casts a hopeful eye on the two countries' intense relationship through the eventual friendship between the two teams.

Formed by women from all walks of life, Run-Off's underdog team embodies the true spirit of sports – that all people, regardless of gender, nationality and political stance, are entitled to play. Strong team spirit is also shown in the way players use their respective strengths to complement each other. Through parallel cameras, the film also vividly reproduces the fieriness and intensity of the competitions by capturing the players' high-speed movements.

The development of ice hockey in Korea has remained stagnant since resources are mainly invested in economically viable sports like soccer. Sports may have become a money-driven business, but Run-Off displays the priceless values of family and friendship that go behind sports, and plays a role in promoting ice hockey in Korea.
