Andy's strangest movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Running on Karma" is one of most peculiar mainstream movies I've ever seen. I would have liked to have been present when the idea for this movie was first discussed: "Let's put Andy Lau in a fake muscle suit and make him a former monk who can see people's karma! Let's add an Indian bad guy who can fit his body into a suitcase. Let's have another bad guy who is like a slippery version of Spiderman. And let's have Cecilia Cheung be the reincarnation of a murderous Japanese soldier. It'll be great!"

Say what?!? It took four scriptwriters to flesh out this bizarre concept and sometimes during the movie one wonders whether those four writers ever talked to each other. The story keeps spinning off in directions one never would have expected.

This is the kind of movie that, after you get a taste of its weirdness, you just have to tell that voice in your head that is shouting "This is ridiculous!" to shut up. It certainly took great nerve to bring this project to the screen and I'm glad I watched it. I'm sure I'll never see anything like it again.

Ridiculous Bodybuilding Suit!! Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
First let me say, I love Andy Lau, and this is basically not a terrible story. The ideas portrayed are interesting. To be sure, karma is always interesting. I understood the premise. I understood (I think) the ending. What I didn't understand was the ridiculous foam rubber bodybuilding "suit" Andy Lau was forced to wear. Oh, I cringe at how he must have felt! There were many other viable alternatives that could have been employed to show Andy's transcendental journey. Who is responsible for this unforgiveable lapse in judgment? I had the feeling the person who came up with this silly idea must have been having his own out of body experience. The whole movie is good -- except for the suit. What makes it worse is that the viewer can never forget that it IS a suit! Andy's head is too small to go with the rest of his body, and the foam rubber muscles bend and are not realistic. Andy Lau did a tremendous job of portraying this character (despite this awful suit) and the other actors were good as well. It could have been a 5-star movie all the way -- except for the suit. Still, Andy Lau fans should not pass this one by. It's not Andy's fault. However, if you're not an Andy fan, I hate to say this, but I can't recommend it. It's just too ridiculous -- the suit, that is! Can you tell the suit really ruined it for me??

Karma Police Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This was my first Johnny To film & I really didn't know what to expect but quickly realized this was a type of drama-thriller. I was impressed & I didn't feel insulted as an audience member because you felt a good amount of thought/planning/effort was placed behind this film/story to stimulate those mental juices. Not a new concept if you're familiar with Buddhist philosophy or how karma(positive or negative) functions, but a good brain teaser for most.

Sad Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I've heard that Andy received the award from this movie.. but it was too dissapointed for me.. First of all, his " fake" costume really looks " fake", it doesn't look real body.. plus, it is too violance and realistic of killing seans, and very gross movie.. I liked Andy's skin head though.. ^0^
But over all, I don't know why he could receive award for this moive..
sorry~ Andy~! = P

Different Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Any Lau played a monk and a gigolo at the same time. I was really shock to see him on the first scene having that big body, i kept arguing with my housemates the Andy Lau's body is not bulky. Well whatever body mask they put on him is not that obvious for those people who does not see him very often... but for me, i knew it.

Anyway, the movie is nice, although that first i was quite lost about those japanese World War II officer hallucinations he had..but eventually all fell into its proper places. Something different...but too sad the female lead died.

Left of Center Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
I love Johnnie To films! Theyre quirky, violent, funny, and sometimes inexplicable. 'Running on Karma', is definately one of his quirkiest. Its like he is screaming to the world, 'This is NOT a ganster movie!' Its one he did for the Box Office, instead of himself. I dont think its my favorite Johnnie To film, but it will certainly entertain you for 2 hours! Spot on subs, and DTS surround, add to the enjoyment. And, where else can you see Andy Lau running around naked in a latex muscle suit? In a Johnnie To Film, of course.

Very Intelligent Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I found this movie very intelligent, thoughtful and moving. For someone who didn't quite understand much about karma and buddhism, this movie really presented the basic ideas behind it in a part-funny, mainly serious manner. I really enjoyed the acting from Andy and Cecilia.

Outstanding - Hong Kong film industry gets a might Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is an excellent film in many ways, combining action, humour and top-notch acting with stunning visuals. Both Cecilia and Andy put in a strong performance and really get into their characters.

It’s a pity that many people found this a disappointment. This is largely to do with the confusion to the ending, or maybe they were expecting another boring film that a lot of Chinese viewers have come to like. You know the “boring?romantic, happy-ever-after- type scenario. Or expecting some sort of “laugh-all-the-way?comedy.

I think people need a change once in a while and accept that it’s a step in the right direction. It sure will help the Hong Kong film industry to make films of this HIGH standard and allow it to gain international recognition/acceptance to the wider audience.

As well as the usual features on the DVD compilation (trailer, cast etc) I found the “making of?feature very interesting. I recommend those “confused?viewers to watch this to understand the true meaning of the film (if they are willing to give it another go).

*** Masterpiece *** Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is an excellent film in many ways, combining action, humour, mystery and top-notch acting with stunning visuals. Both Cecilia and Andy put in a strong performances and really get into their characters.

The best thing about this film is keeping you interested all the time. There is always something happening or waiting to happen but the viewer does not know what it is.

You do have to pay attention to the end though as to avoid confusion. People who knows what "Karma" means should get a better understanding (most chinese) as it relates to a popular religion - Buddhism.

In my opinion, one of the best hong kong films for a long time (alongside infernal affairs) and will appear to both chinese and overseas viewers.
