Sada (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on a true story, this erotic thriller tells the sad and sadistic tale of a Japanese Geisha whose behavior spiralled out of control. Having been raped as a teenager, she subsequently descended into prostitution. The girl was a lonely figure who ultimately sought out vengeance on humankind by castrating and murdering her lover. Similar to IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, this powerful epic from director Nobuhiko Obayashi offers a glimpse into the disturbed product of a brutal upbringing.

Brilliant film of Sada's story Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Sada" is a breathtaking version of the true life story of Sada Abe. Sada was abused at age 14, then sold by her family to become a geisha. Ultimately, she became a prostitute. Eventually, she found a rich patron who wanted her to leave behind that life. He arranged for her to become an apprentice in a restaurant. However, Sada soon developed an obsessive lust for the husband of the heiress restaurant owner. Sada and the husband's affair became increasingly intense, with ever more dangerous love-making, until the husband inadvertently was strangled to death by Sada. As a bizarre memento, Sada cut off and kept the man's private part. Subsequently, she spent five years in prison for manslaughter.

This summation of Sada's story may make it sound like this would be a very tawdry and depressing movie. However, director Obayashi Nobuhiko, through astonishingly creative visual and story-telling techniques, relates most of the story with a charmingly light, almost comic touch.

Actress Kuroki Hitomi gives a marvelous performance, bringing Sada Abe to convincing life from her teens through her thirties. Kuroki's Sada seldom seems like a victim; she always is able to rise from her circumstances with a sense of joy and optimism.

I found this film to be a much more satisfactory telling of the Sada Abe story than Oshima Nagisa's thoroughly depressing "In the Realm of the Senses", a film which seemed to me to be bad pornography for highbrows. The visual energy and full-bodied characterization of Sada in Obayashi's film make for a much more engaging experience.

"Sada" definitely is not for children, but mature audiences will be rewarded by viewing this boundlessly creative film. I should note that the quality of this print of the film is excellent and the English subtitles are very good.

Good Artsy Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is a good movie. I would say it is on the artsy side. It is about a woman who kills her lover and castrates him. It is telling her story of how she got into that situation and her tragic life although the story is made in almost a humourous or light way. You have to see it to know exactly what I am talking about. The film is definitely worth seeing if you like different and artsy films.
