Directed by Lee Byung Hoon (Dae Jang Geum) and written by Choi Wan Kyu (Jumong), the team behind the blockbuster drama Hur Jun, Sangdo chronicles the turbulent life of a legendary merchant named Im Sang Ok. Im would later build an empire based on his ginseng business and become the wealthiest man alive during the later part of Joseon era. Based on bestselling author Choi In Ho's novel of the same title, this period epic sees Lee Jae Ryong (Goodbye Solo, The Immortal Lee Soon Shin) in the critically acclaimed lead role. Kim Hyun Ju (Glass Slipper) returns to the period genre, making it her second effort after Land (2005). Also, adding much weight to the drama is the presence of veteran actor Lee Soon Jae (Hur Jun, Unhindered Highkick) who plays an ambitious businessman. Through one man's determination to walk the path of righteousness and his firm refusal to give in to worldliness, Sangdo teaches the modern-day corporate world a thing or two about honesty and character.

Fame and fortune certainly did not come easy for Im Sang Ok (Lee Jae Ryong), a man of humble origin who began his career as a roving marketer. His life turns around when he meets a business mogul (Lee Soon Jae) whose daughter Da Nyeong (Kim Hyun Ju), a woman of beauty and intelligence with keen financial ability, catches his eyes.

평생 역관이 되고자 하였지만 뜻을 이루지 못한 부친 봉핵에게 종아리를 맞으며, 어린 상옥은 조선 최고의 역관이 되기 위해 한어(漢語)를 열심히 공부한다. 어머니의 고생이 마음에 걸렸던 어린 상옥이 포구난전에서 상인들을 대신해 중국어로 청국 상인과의 거래를 성사시키고 엽전을 받지만, 난전에서 마주친 모친 송씨는 학문에만 전진하지 못한 상옥을 크게 나무란다.

상옥의 또래 동무인 사당패 복태와 억쇠는 사당패 모가비의 봇짐속에 들어있던 닷전을 잃어버려 사당패에서 쫓겨날 처지에 이른다. 상옥은 닷전을 구하기 위해, 의주저자거리의 유기전 포주인에게 닷전을 자신에게 주면 유기전 매상을 곱절로 늘리겠다는 흥정을 하고, 포주인의 옆에서 이를 지켜보던 홍득주는 어린 상옥의 제안을 받아들인다. 상옥은 유기전 앞에서 어린 사당패를 이끌고 연희를 벌이는데…

very long Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
You can watch this while doing something else at the same time and still know what is going on. A bit boring with all the business tactics but if every business man is like this lot, then the world would not be in such a financial turmoil at this moment. There are indeed lots of things one can learn from this extraordinary man, Lin, of that period about how to be a really good businessman. For anyone who wants to be a proper merchant, this is a must.
