YesAsia Editorial Description
Popular and prolific character actor Takenaka Naoto from Ping Pong and Nodame Cantabile returns to the director's chair for Sayonara Color. Both starring and directing, Takenaka Naoto gives a characteristically eccentric performance as a quirky doctor in love with his patient in this moving drama that affects with both offbeat humor and terminal disease pathos. Appropriately enough, 80s idol Harada Tomoyo (The Youth of Kamiya Etsuko) co-stars as the woman who beguiles him in both past and present.
High school crushes can last a lifetime, as amorous doctor Sasaki Shohei (Takenaka Naoto) realizes when Michiko (Harada Tomoyo) checks into his hospital. The girl of his dreams during Sasaki's high school days, Michiko is now gravely ill, and experiencing great setbacks in both life and love. Brought together by chance, Michiko and Sasaki strike new sparks of passion, even as the light slowly goes out on their lives. But who's saving who in this twilight romance?

The Germ in love
| In "Sayonara Color", Takenaka Naoto plays Sasaki, an emotionally repressed medical doctor. Michiko (Harada Tomoyo), one of his patients, is suffering from terminal uterine cancer. We learn that, in their high school days, Sasaki, the class nerd known to his schoolmates as "The Germ", had an unspoken crush on Michiko, but Michiko barely seems to recognize him. Sasaki, on the other hand, has never lost his devotion to and love for Michiko. Both Takenaka and Harada deliver affecting performances and the movie serves up some powerfully moving scenes of love and yearning. Unfortunately, the viewer is constantly distracted by the quirkiness of Takenaka's directorial style and of many of the film's minor characters, sabotaging the film's emotional power. Fans of art house films will enjoy "Sayonara Color", but for a general audience I much more highly recommend one of Takenaka's earlier films, the superb "Quiet Days of Firemen". |
