YesAsia Editorial Description

To eat, or not to eat? That is the question posed in the delightful School Days with a Pig, winner of the Audience Award at the 21st Tokyo Film Festival. Directed by Maeda Tetsu (A Cheerful Gang Turns the Earth), this heartwarming crowdpleaser serves up the triple killer of popular leading man Tsumabuki Satoshi, cute kids, and a cuter piglet. Based on a true story, the film follows the experiences of a schoolteacher and his 28 students who raise a pig together with the original intention of eating it at the end of the school year. Presenting classroom scenes and debates in a documentary-like manner, the film realistically captures the children's experiences and emotions as the year goes by. Also co-starring veterans Harada Mieko and Osugi Ren, School Days with a Pig piles on the easygoing humor, heartfelt sentiments, and cute animal scenes, making the film a big hit for viewers of all ages.

Enthusiastic newbie school teacher Hoshi (Tsumabuki Satoshi) starts off the school year with an interesting project. Towing a piglet to class, Hoshi informs his 28 students they will be raising their new classroom pet together, and then eating it at the end of the year. The kids take a quick liking to their pink mascot and name her P-chan. Learning responsibility and having fun at the same time, they happily play with and care for P-chan, but as the year end draws near, the kids are faced with some tough decisions about P-chan's fate.

Based on a true story, this film is an emotional masterpiece based on a true controversial story that swept across Japan.
A rookie primary school teacher (Satoshi Tsumabuki) suggests his students that they raise a pig, as a way to teach "the real connection between life and food". He further proposes to eat the pig when it is fully grown. The deadline will be their graduation. The class gets a piglet together, and decides to take care of it in rotation. The students decide to name the piglet "P-chan". Hesitant to take care of the P-chan at first, it wasn't long before the students begin to cherish it.
As time passes, the rookie teacher starts facing displeasures from his colleagues and the parents of his students. The children themselves begin to quarrel over the P-chan. However teacher and students manage to overcome the problems and learn a lot from this experience. As things have started to work in a positive way, the class has to face an even bigger dilemma a year later. 365 days of love and devotion showered on P-chan, it has grown big. The deadline of the project is drawing near. They have to decide the fate of P-chan. Will they follow the initial objective of this project or…

Some Pig!
A cuddly piglet, a classroom of smartly dressed kids, and the Japanese heartthrob equivalent of a cuddly piglet - Tsumabuki Satoshi in a pink sweater. You really can't go wrong with School Days with a Pig.

Inspired by a true story, School Days with a Pig is about an enthusiastic teacher who decides to impart the lesson of life to his sixth graders by having them raise a pig together over the course of a year - and then eating it. The kids eagerly take on the responsibility of caring for P-chan together, from feeding leftovers and scooping poop to playing soccer. A pig playing soccer? Aww... Pig on a leash? Double aww...

Much of School Days with a Pig is indeed too heartwarmingly good to be true. It's set at an ideal primary school where the principal is supportive and the students wear cute denim capris instead of uniforms. Mr. Hoshi is so earnest and likable, he wins over not only his students but also his students' doubting parents. The kids are so earnest and likable, they not only try their hardest to take responsibility for their actions, they can even use a saw and hammer without adult supervision and not kill each other in the process. The montage of children raising and playing with the pig is all cinematic cuteness. It's hard to resist the gratuitous charm of a camera following P-chan and its plump behind as it trots down the hallway and up the staircase of the school with what sounds like Latin dance music in the background. But while P-chan is plopping around the school, the children are heatedly debating its future.

The heart of Mr. Hoshi's lesson and presumably the film is a discussion on life, and as graduation nears one day at a time the discussion takes on greater urgency and importance for the students. What happens to P-chan at the end of the year? Who determines the length of life? Why is it OK to eat other pigs but not P-chan? The class debates early on sound hesitant and recited, but they become increasingly emotional and articulate as the film progresses. Near the end the kids really seem to be speaking and arguing on their own volition and emotions, which may be why they go on for quite a bit. There are plenty of Japanese movies dedicated to children and adults crying over their dying pets, but School Days with a Pig differs in that it asks the crying children to determine the end of their pet themselves.

School Days with a Pig might come from a better place with better people, but the story and sentiments are conveyed in a fairly organic and universal manner. There are no twists or tugs beyond what was laid out from the very beginning: the kids raise the pig together, and at the end of the year they determine whether it lives or dies. The answer to that question is not as easy or straightforward as one would expect of a heartfelt movie featuring a cute pig. School Days with a Pig admirably does not offer a cinematic easy way out, and seriously carries the discussion and lesson through to the end. A good film to watch with the kids, but tell them they're not allowed to use saws and hammers to build a pigpen.
