School Daze blurs the lines between fiction and reality for one teenage lad in this visually stylish offering from director Moriya Kentaro. Thrust into the limelight as a young child, Haruo (Moriyama Mirai) decides to give up his lucrative childhood career as an actor in order to keep his stressed-out parents together. But as a teenager, Haruo, now a complete nobody, bullied and tormented at high school, is keen to get back into the showbiz game. He has his eyes on a TV show set in a high school, but notices that the storylines he is offered begin to mirror his real life with worrying accuracy. The film follows Haruo as he struggles to keep in touch with what is really happening and what is staged fantasy. Director Moriya displays an inventive, visually impressive feature, with strong performances by his young actors and an amusing cameo by legendary director Suzuki Seijun.
