Professional Review of "Secret Original Movie Soundtrack (Japan Version)"

August 27, 2007

This professional review refers to Secret Original Movie Soundtrack (OST) (Limited Edition)
Regardless of how you feel about Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou's directorial debut Secret, Jay's work in the film is pretty impressive when you round up all those job titles - the pop star not only played the lead actor and directed the film, he also came up with the original story and co-composed the score. The film's score, with tracks written by Thai composer Terdsak Janpan, all appear in the original soundtrack along with the numerous theme songs from the pseudo-musical.

Some people say that the best film scores are those you don't notice, and the rule applies very well here. For a film where music itself plays such a large role (the characters all go or teach at a music school), most of the score is not very memorable while watching Secret. For a pop composer, Jay Chou makes a fairly smooth transition from pop songs to instrumentals, eschewing catchy choruses and verses for elegant piano-heavy tracks. Except for a few key moments in the film where the music happens to be the most memorable aspect - the piano battle (Track 5) and the Jay-Rain piano duet (Track 6) - the Secret Original Soundtrack balances suitability with quality. In other words, most of the instrumentals from the film don't particularly stand out when watching the film, but one can definitely sense the effort put into it when only listening to the soundtrack.

It might surprise a few people, but Jay actually didn't play the piano in most of the instrumental tracks on this soundtrack. While he did write many of the tracks, he actually only played the piano in two of them - "Rain Lu" (Track 15) and The Swan (Track 16). Writing many of these tracks (15, to be precise) is an impressive feat in itself, but it's even more impressive that Jay was able to shed his usual beat-driven signature Western-Chinese hybrid pop style to match the film's subdued English countryside atmosphere. However, it would seem appropriate for Jay to actually play the piano himself on these songs, especially considering that his character in the film is supposed to be some kind of piano genius.

Fans who actually want to hear Jay shouldn't abandon hope. The pop star does contribute several pop songs that appear in the film. The two songs from the prom scene - "Don't Cry For Me, Girls" (Track 11) by lyricist Huang Jun Lang and "The Sunny-Day Doll" (Track 12) by newcomer Chiang Yu Chen - are effective when considering the context of the scene they appear in. Especially unique is "Girls", a rare rock-and-roll effort from Jay that proves he isn't trapped in his own style. But for maximum Jay presence, title song "Unspeakable Secret" (Track 25) sung by Jay himself is your pick. Combining his usual style of ballad with a dash of British rock influence, "Secret" honestly is no breakthrough in his discography; the arrangement and the melody are more Mayday than Keane, but the song is nevertheless the usual rock-solid Jay Chou-style ballad, even if it doesn't match the tone of the film.

Quite frankly, I was not a big fan of Secret the film. Nevertheless, the score happens to be one of the few good things about it. By achieving that precarious balance where the score suits the film without calling attention to itself, Jay has proven that he is more than just a pop artist, but a true musician. The Secret Original Soundtrack is worth checking out, even if it's just to prove wrong the naysayers that doubt Jay's musical abilities.

Simply Breathtaking Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is my favorite OST for an asian film. Jay Chou is simply amazing. The movie 'Secret' was excellent in and of itself, but what really makes the film is the music. The compositions are excellently arranged and the music is simply beautiful. It's a soundtrack where the music just grabs a hold of your heart and pierces your soul.

Track 9 is one of the only tracks with words. It is a beautiful traditional chinese songs that brings me to tears at times. The vocalist has such a touching voice. Just as it's Jay Chou's favorite song, it all of a sudden becomes yours.

Jay Chou has proved himself to be and excellent artist, director, and musician. I am truly impressed with Secret in its entirety. Relive the movie with the OST and let the music consume you.

Keep up the good work Jay Chou!

Excellent Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I was actually quite hesitant to buy this because it cost more than 20$. But I have to say, if you loved the movie as much as I did, then you'll love the soundtrack! not to mention the mini-photo book that comes with it! It's a must-have for all Jay Chou or Secret fans!

an expectation-exceeding stuff Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It's a really fantastic soundtrack. It's a pure enjoyment, both visually and aurally. As a limited edition package, it is really neat - a booklet with still images and dialogues from the movie, and also the lyrics for the four vocal tunes in the CD. The instrumental tunes are really magnificent, and make me want to learn piano actually, and my favourites are the tunes from tracks 5, 6, 18 & 22. The vocal tunes are also awesome. I've been listening to "Secret I can't tell" for quite some time with just the CD single, but now, it's a whole new experience listening to this song and looking through the booklet together. I hope you'll like it too.

Well crafted soundtrack Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Not knowing what to expect before I bought this CD, I was pretty impressed with this soundtrack. 21 out of 25 tracks are purely instrumental, but they certainly are on par, if not better, than what you will find in big Hollywood productions. I haven't seen the movie, but the tracks seem to portray the various moods in the story well. Jay played the piano for several of the instrumental tracks, and he did great! Out of the 4 vocal tracks, I liked the hit single "Secret I can't Tell" the most. It does sound similar to his old songs when I first heard it, but definitely fits with the overall style of the soundtrack.
