Security Unlimited (DVD) (Digitally Remastered) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

After revolutionizing Hong Kong films with their hit comedies in the 70s, the Hui Brothers returned in 1981 with their most successful film yet - Security Unlimited, which smashed box office records. This time, actor-singer Sam also takes part in writing the script alongside actor-director Michael. Even Stanley, the lesser-known member of the Hui Brothers, provides support behind the scenes in the capacity of executive director. Michael gives a convincing performance that won him the Best Actor award in the first Hong Kong Film Awards as Cheong, who, along with Lung (Ricky Hui) and Sam (Sam Hui), work at the Wong Security company. One day, Lung and Sam are robbed when they escort a huge sum of cash to the bank! Are these bumbling security guards able to chase the money back?

A comedy gold mine waiting to be rediscovered
The Hui Brothers filled the void left by Bruce Lee and practically ruled Hong Kong Cinema in most of the 1970s. Their surge in prominence began with Games Gamblers Play in 1974. Equipped with a keen eye for the peculiarities of life and society, and a knack to turn them into belly-bursting jokes, the funnymen trio made themselves household names with a succession of powerful laugh bombs that even newer generations raised on Stephen Chow comedies should find appealing.

The Hui Brothers were in the prime of their career and could seemingly do no wrong. Going into the 80s, the comedy icons were at it again, making their fifth collaboration, Security Unlimited. This time, the lesser-known Hui brother, Stanley, joined the sibling reunion behind the scene as the executive director. Big brother Michael remained the main creative force though, as he directs and co-writes the script with Sam.

In front of the camera, Michael, Sam, and Ricky play three security guards who find themselves in a series of outrageous situations during duty. There are laughs aplenty, and the whole hour-and-a-half runtime is very comfortable to sit through. This editor was literally choking with laughter over the unorthodox training sessions conducted by Captain Chou. The sequence of the funeral parlor job where the trio are assigned to guard a corpse with body parts worth millions of US dollars, and the final fight against a quartet of antique robbers, are pure comic gold, too. Michael was named Best Actor at the first Hong Kong Film Awards for his portrayal as the pathetically funny Captain Chou, but Ricky deserves a mention too for his poor puppy eye looks. His subplot with a beautiful illegal Mainland immigrant (played by Wong Zo See) provides the film its emotional center.

Granted, the paper-thin story can be described as a string of loosely connected comedy sketches, but how can one complain when there's so much fun to be had with the well-acted gags and totally likable characters? Sadly, Security Unlimited was the last film the Hui Brothers did before they pursued different career paths. Since there haven't been many great Hong Kong comedies in recent years, perhaps we can instead search through our collective memories, and there lies the inimitable legacy of the Hui Brothers.
