Lain is a shy and introspective 14-year-old suburban schoolgirl who has few friends at school, and is disconnected from her family at home. One day she receives an email from classmate Chisa, who had committed suicide. Chisa tells her she isn't dead, but that she has abandoned her flesh to become a part of the Wired network. Lain gets pulled deeper and deeper into the Wired, and its layers of consciousness and reality.
Originally aired in 1998, Serial Experiments Lain is a visually and psychologically haunting anime series covering complex themes about virtual and material reality, and the cross-section of consciousness, communication, and identity. The mind-boggling series inspired a cult following in both Japan and abroad, and academia literature to boot. Lain was also hailed for its distinctive character design by Yoshitoshi ABe.
This edition comes with a bonus DVD, soundtrack CD, special case, and booklet.
