YesAsia Editorial Description
Teddy Robin Kwan's 1990 movie Shanghai Shanghai, in the tradition of Hong Kong Chinese New Year films, features a stunning cast that consists of the hottest stars at the time. The late Hong Kong diva Anita Mui, popular singer Sandy Lam, action stars Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, renowned singer George Lam, and elegant actress Tanny Tien each take up a role in this comedy set in 1930s Shanghai.
Shanghai military official Big Tiger (George Lam) receives an order to protect Mary Sung (Anita Mui), goddaughter of Shanghai celebrity Mr. Chin (Sammo Hung). But she actually has a secret mission to investigate the loss of revolutionary party funds, and begins to suspect her respected godfather. On the other hand, Big Tiger's younger brother, Little Tiger (Yuen Biao), encounters a girl (Sandy Lam) from an acrobatic troupe. He then joins a group of kind-hearted outlaws, creating a big headache for his law-enforcing brother. As if that is not enough, Big Tiger is also torn between the beautiful Mary and a gorgeous social butterfly (Tanny Tien). How can he get through all this in the end?

Quirky test run?
| I don't know how much influence Yuen Biao had in this film but it has a distinct earthy "Yuen Biao" feel to it; like the majority of the films he's in have. The film is a touch grainy like the whole film should be in sepia tones giving it a classic era atmosphere but it doesn't save the story much. There are some interesting showdowns in this as only Sammo & Yuen can provide but definately doesn't seem like they had quite honed their ideas/choreography. If you love this pairing as well as Wing chun, check out Prodigal Son, a much better development compared to this composition. |

DVD Region Code or VCD
DVD Region Code or VCD
| When are they coming out with a different DVD region code like Region 1 or Region ALL since I lived in California, USA and cannot play DVD Region 3 here or at least a VCD version because the line of stars in this movie is just great and they are all of high caliber? If I remember right and am not mistaken, there is a similar title of this movie made by Shaw Bros many years ago but I don't know if they have the same plot or not; however, the latter (Shaw Bros) had not been digitally remastered and released by Celestial Pictures yet. I have not seen this movie yet due to the Region Code restriction so cannot come up with my personal review but I would probably rate it a 10 because of the skilled actors and actresses that appeared in this movie. |

fantastic end fight
fantastic end fight

ok the film isnt the best, but when sammo hung is the bad guy and yuen biao is the good, you know when they face off its going to be great. yuen biao has about three major fights, shows some incredible flexability, and the fight at the end shows himself and sammo throw some great wing chun sequences, high kicks and very fast and detailed hand to hand combat |
