David Chiang (a.k.a. John Chiang) has portrayed countless chivalric swordsmen in the 1970s, and he stars as a heroic monk in Shaolin Abbot. His talent in acting and filmmaking is perhaps genetically coded - his brother Paul Chun is also a veteran actor, while his half-brother Derek Yee enjoys a successful directorial career, recently making acclaimed films like Protege. Directed by Ho Meng Hua in 1979, Shaolin Abbot features David Chiang as a Shaolin monk who dedicates himself to reviving the Ming Dynasty and overthrowing the Qing regime. He leaves the Shaolin Temple to learn weapon-making skills, only to witness the Qing army burning down the Shaolin Temple when he returns. Grieved and infuriated, he heads towards Southern China to raise money to rebuild the temple, make alliances with those who share the same vision, and prepare to strike back when the time comes.

少林寺眾僧立志反清復明，至善禪師（姜大衛）前往峨嵋山取得煉鋼之法和鑄造各種兵器、暗器的圖樣之後，匆匆趕回少林，卻遇上清兵火燒少林寺，寺中眾僧大部份血戰而死。至善前往南方，肩負起重建少林寺的重任，一面化緣募捐，一面結識江湖豪傑，並收錄李錦綸（徐少強）、童千斤（吳杭生）等熱血青年為弟子……

While international favorite David Chiang was best known for his roles as a grinning, streetwise, fighter in many Chang Cheh-directed classics, he rarely played a noble warrior monk. But here he portrays the great Chih Shim, the monk who saved the Southern Shaolin Temple. Making this production all the more notable is Lo Lieh, Shaws’ first international star, who returns to a role he also made famous – that of Shaolin renegade Pai Mei. This, and even more, makes for a true martial arts epic of the first order.
