Product Information

Professional Review of "Shaolin Soccer (Korean Version)"

Without doubt, Shaolin Soccer is the most popular film in Hong Kong in 2001. It is welcome by both the critics and general audience. Stephen Chow, once again, proves that he is still the most influential and prominent filmmaker/actor in Hong Kong. Sing (Stephen Chow) is a zealous Shaolin disciple who is always trying his best to promote Shaolin Kung Fu, but he is ignored by the public. One day, he comes across a retired soccer player Fung (Mang-Tat Ng) and is inspired by him. With the help of his friends, Sing forms a soccer team and participates in the National tournament. He wishes to tell everyone that Kung Fu can be applied to any aspect of life by winning the tournament. His biggest opponent ahead is the Devil Team led by Hung (Patrick Tse). Stephen Chow is always full of creative ideas. In A Chinese Odyssey, he successfully reinvented the image of the traditional Monkey King. In King of Comedy, he created a self-reflexive character and reexamined his career in a semi-autobiographical manner. In this film, the thematic element is his favorite - Kung Fu. Anyone who loves Stephen Chow should know that Chow is a number one fan of Bruce Lee. He always loves to show off his "Kung Fu" in his comedies. This time, with Shaolin Soccer, he can finally incorporate his favorite with the plot of the film and play around with it at his own will. This story of this film is quite meaningful, it is not only funny, it does contain metaphors which might not be understandable to Western audience. Through the harsh encounter of Sing in the film, Chow encourages people to strive for their hope under extreme bad condition. It parallels to the depressing reality where people are facing a bad time after the financial crisis in Asia a few years ago. The positive attitude toward difficult reality promoted by this film creates a spiritual encouragement and it explains why the film is easily accepted by the general public in Hong Kong. I am sure anyone would be startled by Shaolin Soccer's fantastic special effects. In this film, Chow combines the latest computer special effects with the soccer story brilliantly without a flaw. The computer graphic in this film is even better than the acclaimed Storm Riders. I don't know how to describe how good it is, in short, you have to see it yourself to enjoy it! In terms of the cast, everyone is excellent. Chow loves to cast new actors. As usual, there are several new faces in this film. The most impressive one is probably the Bruce Lee look-alike K. K. Chan. He is regarded as the best imitator of Bruce Lee in the last twenty years. Most of the new actors in this film become popular afterwards. Vicky Zhao, the lead actress of this film, does not share too much appearance, which makes me disappointed. Anyway, I think her character still has strong potential to develop. I am eagerly waiting for the sequel. In short, if you only see one Asian film a year, this is definitely the one you should pick. I think it is good that it has the regular Chinese version and the English version. It is like getting two movies for the price of one. Plus, the picture quality is very good. Definitely worth the money. |

Vicky Zhao stands out most. When she entered the stadium looking like an alien, she was quite funny. She looks pretty even when she hid behind a disfigured face and/or a bald head but the film is not all that funny. A bit disappointing if you want a bit of laugh.

You have to agree that there is a diversity of humor out there & you either enjoy/understand Stephen Chow gags or you don't. Even though I don't understand the more language involved puns that Stephen is infamous for, I appreciate the atmosphere expressed & of course slapstick is universal in most cases. I enjoy anything that pays homage (even humorous) to Kung-fu or Asian pugilism in general. Therefore, Stephen Chow's style has been high up on my list. This edition also includes a choice of US release or "original" Chinese release versions (which also shows a difference in humor evidenced by some scenes cut).

Marks for something different, but the who movie is really rather silly. Whilst I like comedy, I do find this movie to be a waste of time. Watch it once, because that is enough.

I have not seen any Stephen Chow movies so am new to this kind of comedy. Therefore, all I can say is that it takes a little getting use to and not sure if this would appeal to all viewers (some people may think the comedy is rather crude actually). Being a comedy, it does a fairly good job and some segments are extremely funny (classics actually and I dont want to spoil it here because there arent many). Apart from that, much of the other comedy sections are, well ok. Storyline wise, its also ok, the acting is also pretty good and the music suits the film perfectly (trust me, the music at the start sets the tone magnificently for this movie). There are also quite a few special effects in the film I think HK had a kind of obsession with using special effects in movies at that time but it worked out ok and the movie would not have been the same without it. Is it a great movie? Personally, I have to disagree but its not bad and most importantly, different with enough laughs that should please most viewers so give it a try and youll either love it or loath it or just think its ok.
