From Itami Juzo, the critically acclaimed director behind such films as Tampopo and The Funeral, comes the winning melodrama Shizukana Seikatsu (A Quiet Life). Based on the 1995 novel by Itami's brother in law and Nobel Prize-winning author Kenzaburo Oe, this film adaptation centers on the exploits of Iiyo (Watabe Atsura), a mentally challenged, but musically gifted teen, and Maa (Saeki Hinako), the boy's artistic younger sister who is put in charge of caring for her sibling after their parents go to Australia. Loosely based on the real life experiences of Kenzaburo's Oe's handicapped son, the story confronts the unique issues and difficulties facing both the handicapped and those who must take care of them.

This tender coming of age story turns more serious in tone as the dark forces of the outside world loom over the lives of these two innocent youths. Worried that Iiyo may have deeper problems, Maa decides to search for someone that can help her brother. And that's when the two of them cross paths with Arai-Kun (Masayuki Imai), a guy who seemingly could serve double duty as both a great swim instructor for Iiyo and a romantic interest for Maa. Unfortunately for both of them, Arai-Kun has a dark side to him that comes out in ways neither sibling could anticipate. With Iiyo's life becoming increasingly difficult to manage, can these two siblings make it in the world today?

Shizukana Seikatsu was nominated for four Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Watabe Atsuro), Best Supporting Actor (Imai Masayuki), and Best Music Score (Oe Hikaru), with Watabe Atsuro taking home the Newcomer of the Year prize! Featuring an appearance by Itami Juzo's wife Miyamoto Nobuko (Maruso No Onna - A Taxing Woman), Shizukana Seikatsu is one Itami classic worth checking out!
