YesAsia Editorial Description

Silent Code is set in the world of BBS (Bulletin Board System), an online forum community platform that is very popular among Taiwan youth. Idol drama stars Chen Bo Lin (In Time with You), Ivy Chen (Skip Beat!), Shiou Jieh Kai (Black & White) and Puff Kuo (Miss Rose) headline this curious cautionary tale about online conflicts with real world consequences. Seamlessly blending live-action and CG animation into a cyber suspense inspired by true events, the film bridges the cyber world and BBS culture with real-world scenarios. Fittingly enough, Silent Code marks the feature debut of director Hero Lin Shi Yong, the creator of the Woodman animation series which is famous in Taiwan's online community.

Righteous journalist Lan (Puff Kuo) is committed to reporting the truth and fighting for justice, but in reality, her job consists mainly of taking orders from her superiors and searching for news online. One day, she stumbles upon a popular BBS forum dedicated to sharing dreams. The board owner Xiang (Ivy Chen) incurred the wrath of the internet community after a video got leaked, and the witchhunt is pushing her to the edge. Lan sets out to find the culprit behind the leak, and clues seem to point to Xiang's hacker ex-boyfriend King (Chen Bo Lin). The more Lan investigates, the more people get dragged into the case and the murkier the truth becomes. Who is really behind this internet war?

This edition includes making-of, character profiles, special short, theme song music video, alternate ending and behind-the-scenes.

The Code of Dis-ease (A) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
At first I wasn’t sure what to expect from “Silent Code”, a bit Matrix, a bit sci-fi and romance? Well certainly maybe, but more so a surprisingly interesting romance movie relating to the Taiwanese youth interest in social BBS (Bulletin Board System), and dis-ease. It has a shaky start, but “Silent Code” progresses into an interesting mix of social youth culture amidst on-line bullying conflicts. It’s also in 3D animation, where a BBS forum community have imaginative avatars, represented as metallic robot characters in a sort of Tron/Matrix world within the BBS group. The forum members only tap at a keyboard input, but the cyber world manifests to expresses the BBS members ‘entering the matrix’ so to speak. And what a troubled cyber world it is; a cyber BBS forum dedicated to sharing personal dreams, and where a big forum conflict is blamed on Xiang (Ivy Chen), a board administrator whose ‘leaked’ video causes hyper anger amongst forum members, due to suspicion that her ex bf King (Wilson Chen) hacked the forum system, leaked the vid and caused all the grief.

But Xiang is sick in hospital with a terminal disease, after splitting up with King, but keeps a photo of them together on her laptop. Xiang loves King deeply. But Xiang grieves heavily about breaking up with him and the added video scandal doesn’t help her sickness much. But all this drama is seen through the investigative perspective of reporter Lan (Puff Kuo), forced by her angry boss to bag a ‘cut and paste’ BBS forum story about cyber bullying. But when Lan researches her on-line story she discovers this BBS site and the video leak scam. Curious Lan (putting on her Alice head) tries to locate information about the video and cyber bullying, and getting ‘bashed’ by a throng of angry BBS members known as The Villagers (a bit similar to the Angry Birds), a sort of people power of independence within the BBS world that bash, bully and spurt bad comments when they deem fit (their BBS world even having a Hate Zone). But after her on-line investigations Lan is held for questioning by cyber police about a major hacking crime pointing to the super hacker King, and so Lan relates her cyber-reporting experience to a cyber cop to shed light on the hacking culprit, which this whole movie is a flashback of. Lan doesn’t believe King is guilty and seems innocent of the video leak. But the more Lan investigated the BBS forum members, the deeper the plot thickened. And Xiang lay sick in her hospital bed.

The Code of Dis-ease (B) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
“Silent Code” is very like a Hollywood HK blend and somewhat with a Disneyesqe feel. The madcap and funny 3D CGI elements transporting you into a sort of Rayman video adventure game world (although a game that came to my mind regarding the robots here was PC computer game ‘Machinarium’ which is a brilliant adventure game I’d recommend), but it is pretty interesting and this movie's extensive 3D animations are very good. I’ve never heard of the Woodman animation series before (the character featured in this film), so learned something new from this. Considering the CGI I liked the metaphorical RTS video game ‘battles’ and robot combat as the Villagers ‘attack’ each other in this cyber space video game world, bringing in some 4D thinking to what’s going on here…lol. But at this film’s heart, is a re-uniting love story, and of a famous hacker, who after breaking up with his girlfriend, slowly realises how his love could heal her sickness and save her life. In fact at the beginning Lan (Puff Kuo) stands on top of a high rise ready to throw herself off (reminding me of Korean movie “Windstruck”) giving up an her BBS members (due their overkill Angry Birds mode) and her dis-ease. In a parallel sense, to the BBS cyber data world of this movie, and the system shutdown aspect, it’s actually said that certain dis-eases can spring up in the body by the ‘will’ of the person. But also can be avoided by that will. (A silent code of DNA?) Can inner pure light (its energy code) and positive mind cure or reverse a cancer process? The body is physical energy after all (a DNA code of light) and things connect by will of matter. Anyway food for thought, maybe we don’t realise as humans how much inner sources of healing we actually have.

Wilson Chen and Ivy Chen also make a nice loyal love interest here (interesting to see how Wilson is doing since I first watched him in Twins Effect II some years ago). For this DVD edition its R3, but does have additional English subtitles for deleted scenes on the bonus disk (the none removable type though). Unfortunately all other extras are not English subbed. Its okay this, but don’t expect a mega hit of a film, but pulling all its element themes together, its quite an uplifting, revealing and worthy story. Certainly more for fans of romance, anime and comical adventure video games than sci-fi.
