"Slumdog Millionaire", through a series of flashbacks, tells the astonishing life of young Jamal Malik, a child of the slums now working as a "chaiwallah", someone who fetches tea for the employees at a call center. He manages to become a contestant on India's version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" His extraordinary success sparks suspicions. How can an uneducated slum resident possibly know the answers to these difficult questions? On the eve of the show in which he will have a chance to win the ultimate prize, Jamal is arrested by the police on suspicion of fraud. His responses to the questions posed him by a police inspector form the subject of the film's biographical flashbacks, as we see that the hard knocks Jamal has taken in his short life have provided the information for the answers to the TV show's questions. We learn that Jamal and his brother, as young children, became known as the Musketeers for their fearless adventures in the slums, that their mother was killed during a Hindu rampage on their Muslim slum, that Jamal invited a little girl named Latika to join he and his brother in the Musketeers, now living on their own on the streets, that evil circumstances led to the separation of Jamal from Latika and to Jamal dedicating his life to find the girl with whom he has fallen in love. And we see that Jamal's purpose now in being a contestant on the TV show is not to win the money, but simply to stay on the program for long enough that Latika may see him on the show and come to see him. While depicting Jamal's life through flashbacks necessarily leads to a rather choppy kind of storytelling, the viewer gets swept up in the powerful romance of Jamal's extraordinary adventures and the power of his love for the exquisitely beautiful Latika. Director Danny Boyle keeps events moving swiftly, although never at the expense of the deep emotions flowing from the lives of these exceptional young people. If Charles Dickens were alive today and living in Mumbai, he might write something quite like this. Highly recommended. |
