導演李紅旗1999年結業于中央美術學院油畫系，1999年開始發表詩歌及中短篇小說，出版有長篇小說《幸運兒》、《我感到渾身有使不完的勁》。《好多大米》是他導演的第一部作品。

這又是一部文學家拍電影的案例，監制是作家朱文，主演是作家韓東。影片的影像風格很樸素，有些呆照，但基本是傳統的。影片的先鋒性在于它在敘事和主題上的非傳統性，也就是說它要破除關于故事、人物、主題、象征等傳統的解讀影片的概念，提供一種不同于常規的影像。
